Raised life expectancy from 38 years in 1949 72 years. 10. Led the development of heavy industry with Soviet aid, despite the brutal embargo of the USA, which led to a famine despite China's best efforts. 11. Established state-owned industrial base, laying groundwork for later development in steel, coal, machinery. 12. Developed nuclear weapons which protect the nation today from imperialism powers. 13. Stop the imperialists from taking all of Korea. 14. Built extensive irrigation and infrastructure through mass mobilization (dams, canals, etc). 15. Opened diplomatic relations with the U.S. via Nixon's 1972 visit, shifting global geopolitics. 16. Unified written language efforts and simplified Chinese characters for broader literacy. 17. Fought the Fascist Japanese occupation effectively in base areas during WWII. 18. Inspired global anti-colonial movements as a symbol of Third World revolution. 19. Achieved early economic growth in the 1950s, despite brutal US sanctions on farming equipment and machinery. 20. Built foundational transportation infrastructure (railways, roads). 21. The deadliest famine in human history wasn't a natural disaster. It was engineered by a communist government. In 1958, Mao Zedong launched the Great Leap Forward to turn communist China into an industrial giant overnight. Peasants were forced off their land and onto massive collective farms. Private farming was banned. To hit impossible steel quotas, villagers melted their own pots, tools and plows in backyard furnaces. The metal came out worthless. And grain rotted in the fields, because the farmers who should have been harvesting it were making steel instead. Terrified to report failure, local officials sent Beijing wildly inflated harvest numbers. The state then seized grain based on those fake figures and left entire villages with nothing. Even as people starved, the government kept exporting grain and refused foreign aid, in order to protect the image of the revolution. It blamed the deaths on bad weather. When a top general warned Mao the policy was killing millions, Mao purged him and pushed harder still. Estimates of the dead run from around 15 million to 45 million, and some historians go even higher. It remains the worst famine ever recorded. Not drought. Not war. A communist government that starved its own people.

Mao Zedong died fifty years ago today, on 9 September 1976. Half a century on, the standard way of dismissing the achievements of Chinese socialism is still to invoke Mao as a monster – a tyrant with tens of millions of deaths to his name. The party’s own verdict is that Mao’s errors were “the errors of a great proletarian revolutionary”. Which is why Deng Xiaoping, himself purged and humiliated during the Cultural Revolution, could still say that without Mao’s leadership the Chinese Revolution would not have triumphed, and that for the party and the people he remains “a very precious treasure”.
