Kairos Power recently produced 8 metrics tons of high-purity Flibe that will soon be tested in our second Engineering Test Unit. The campaign builds on a previous production run at our Molten Salt Purification Plant in Elmore, Ohio. We were able to produce salt using more advanced processing and purification techniques to reach the purity levels required for nuclear coolant operations. It was a pleasure hosting @ANS_org President Mark Peters at our Reactor Demonstration Campus in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, this week. Dr. Peters met with Kairos Power staff members and got a firsthand look at the progress we’re making on Hermes 2, which will deliver up to 50 MW of reliable power to the @TVAnews grid to help power @Google data centers.

What can a nuclear experiment from the 1960s teach us today about advanced reactors? The Molten Salt Reactor Experiment at @ORNL pioneered molten salt research and is helping to inform the development of our fluoride salt-cooled high-temperature reactor. #NuclearSciWeek

Update: The Pebble Handling Storage System was recently installed in our Engineering Test Unit 2. It’s the 41st and final equipment skid making up our first fully modular, reactor-scale non-nuclear hardware test in Albuquerque. The PHSS moves pebbles in and out of the reactor core to support online refueling and is one of several primary systems we’ll be testing during operations early next year.

QR-coded pebbles? Our new automated system in Albuquerque checks each fuel pebble for key manufacturing specs then laser-engraves it with a unique tracking code. This gives our team a way to individually trace thousands of fuel pebbles through testing and reactor operations. See it in action👇

Operating a reactor is one thing. Maintaining it is another. ETU 3 is giving our teams a chance to test precast concrete shielding designs and remote maintenance technologies to help reduce operating costs for our future fleet. It will also serve as a training platform for future operators.

Busy week for our leadership team in New York City, and a very productive one. Our new agreement with Samsung C&T will make sure we deploy the Hermes 2 plant with greater cost and schedule certainty to the @TVAnews grid in East Tennessee.

We learn by building. The final equipment skid has been moved into our Engineering Test Unit 2 enclosure in Albuquerque.  It’s one of more than three dozen skids that are stacked and integrated to form our first modularly built, non-nuclear hardware test.  ETU 2 will be the world’s largest Flibe molten salt system and will help inform the design, build, and operations of our Hermes 2 Plant in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

We use historical data from the MSRE to advance our own research on our KP-FHR technology. Our Hermes 2 Demonstration Plant will be the first deployment under our agreement with @Google and will be one of the first U.S. reactors since MSRE to operate on the same Flibe molten salt coolant. Hermes 2 will use solid fuel (TRISO pebbles), instead of liquid fuel used in MSRE, to deliver reliable power to the @TVAnews grid.

ONE-OF-A-KIND: @ORNL's Molten Salt Reactor Experiment tested the potential use of liquid fuel reactor technologies for commercial power generation. It operated from 1965 to 1969 and logged more than 13,000 hours of valuable data that is used today to support MSR R&D.
