Do not query before you have a) finished writing your book, b) revised your book, c) shown your query to someone unfamiliar with your work who can point out confusing bits. #querytip

I’m always amused (and fairly horrified) by queries that try to insult me. Like, has this approach ever worked for anyone? In the history of ever? It’s not clever or funny. Don’t do it. #querytip

The number of queries I’ve seen lately with 200k & 300k words has been a little concerning so I thought I’d try to take a moment to chat about high word counts… a 🧵 #amquerying #QueryTip #WritingCommunity

If you’ve queried me before, feel free to query me again with a new manuscript. I’ve taken on clients’ book 2 or 3. It shows you have perseverance, tenacity, and a knowledge of the industry, that you don’t take it personally, because it’s not personal. #WritingCommunity #querytip

#QueryTip: I heard a rumor that there's some advice floating around to close out a query as no response after 2-4 weeks & well... You should NOT. Unless the agent specifically says, they likely haven't seen your query yet or are still considering it. (Quick 🧵)

What is an inciting incident? It’s the moment your MC can no longer have their “normal.” It’s the thing that forces them to make a decision (whether that is action or in action). It’s the driving force of the story and should happen toward the beginning of the book #QueryTip

Hard truth (a short 🧵): I have to reject really amazing sounding books everyday. Think about it this way, if you were handed 100+ books a week (every week) could you realistically read them all? … #QueryTip #WritingCommunity

Something I never thought I would have to say—a query is not an application for a dating site. 🙃 #QueryTip

When you receive a rejection, don't insult the person who sent it. Just because *this* piece of work isn't right for them doesn't mean they won't want to work w/ you on the next. By insulting them, all you're doing is guaranteeing that you never get that chance. #querytip #subtip

Still noticing the query trend of VERY long MG novels: 70K, 80K, 90K (!!) Cut these down, folks. This is too long for an MG debut. #querytip

#querytip Keep a folder on your desktop with your synopsis, full manuscript, first 50p, first 100p, and a document w/ questions often asked in query manager so you can copy & paste. Things like: 1-sentence pitch, the potential target audience for your book, etc. All ready to go!

Since I'm seeing a ridiculous amount of queries that aren't following directions or not utilizing their skills in a way that catches attention, I wanted to do a quick #querytip thread. Keep in mind, I AM NOT reading queries at this second, so this is not a subtweet to anyone.

If you are going to re-query a project I've already seen that has undergone significant revision, please point out that it has changed since I last saw it. Otherwise I'll see the title and assume you are simply re-querying the same book, and will pass. #querytip
