We've studied the moons of Mars from Earth, from orbit, and even in the sky as seen from the surface. (This view comes from the Curiosity rover.) Now, the @JAXA_en MMX mission will see them up close, and even bring a sample home. NASA will be assisting each step of the way. 1/2

RT @NASASolarSystem: This May, Psyche flew by Mars, using its gravity for a speed boost. In December, Europa Clipper will do the same at Earth! Both spacecraft still have long journeys. Psyche will rendezvous with an asteroid of the same name in 2029, and Europa Clipper arrives at Jupiter in 2030.

Setting records is just a bonus. Longer drives are putting more geological diversity within reach faster, taking the rover from an ancient lakebed up a fossilized river system and onto a crater rim, where an entirely different ancient habitat may await.

A journey to the depths of ancient Mars? Perseverance is exploring a field of light-toned rocks, which are an unusual sight on Mars, a planet dominated by dark-colored basaltic stones. This piqued the team’s interest. What are they? How did they get here?  ½

Speaking of dust storms, happy Martian New Year! 🎉 Today marks the beginning of the planet's year, which lasts 687 Earth days. This is Mars year 39 ⏤ the count began with a notable dust storm observed in 1956.

📅 Mars year 1 started on 11 April 1955. But why? 🌪️ That date was chosen so that the 1956 global dust storm, the first well-documented one, falls at the very start of the count.
