    RT @AfricanArchives: In 1958, David Isom, 19, broke the color line in a Florida segregated public pool. It resulted in officials closing the facility. On June 8, 1958, a city manager in St. Petersburg, Florida, ordered the closure of a public indoor swimming pool after a Black 19-year-old named David Isom used the facility. In April 1957, St. Petersburg opened its segregated public swimming facilities to Black residents after the city ruled in favor of six Black community members who had filed a suit against the city government over its discriminatory practices. Despite the ruling, St. Petersburg’s facilities remained segregated by practice for well over a year. Denied access to the public Spa Pool and Spa Beach downtown, Black residents were forced to travel to Tampa Bay where a much smaller, less well-maintained facility nicknamed the “South Mole” was open to them. On June 8, Mr. Isom arrived at the all-white Spa Pool and purchased an entry ticket. There were roughly 50 white bathers in the pool when he arrived. He swam for less than a half hour and then continued with his day. “I just feel that it’s not a privilege to use the pool, but a right,” Mr. Isom stated. After Mr. Isom’s departure, the pool manager promptly announced that the Spa Pool and the adjoining Spa Beach would both be closed immediately because of Mr. Isom’s swim, following orders from the city manager, Ross Windom. Both facilities remained closed until the following week, when the city council reopened them.

Witnesses say opposing players were repeatedly yelling the racial slur, the N-word, and that led to the pushing and shoving. Colbert says officials first told her the ejection applied to the rest of one game, then told the family the suspension extended through the season. Colbert says her son and an opposing safety were face-to-face after a play and that both should have been penalized for taunting. “Both kids should have received a taunting penalty,” she wrote. She says her son was ejected while the opposing player received no flag. Colbert also said her son was the team’s running back and had already scored three touchdowns; her claim that officials were looking for a reason to remove him is her interpretation of what happened. In a video caption, Colbert identified the clip of the play as the one that led to her son’s ejection. She says the opposing player pushed her son after he was already out of bounds. The footage shows a play involving players from both teams, but does not by itself establish when the whistle blew or settle the competing descriptions of the contact. Colbert also alleges that her son was punched in the head and that another player joined in stomping him while a coach was pulling the other player away. She says Mustang players were punched, kicked, and face-masked without penalties. Those are her allegations; the recording does not independently verify each incident. Her account of the later game is that a league director initially would not review the video, then asked, “He got ejected for that?” Colbert says she was told afterward that referees did not want her son to play. She also says another group of referees offered to officiate and that, during a discussion with opposing coaches, one coach was willing to let the player play—but the opposing head coach said no. Comments on the TikTok post offer conflicting accounts. A commenter displayed as Fire alleged that an opposing player had called the boy the N-word. Another commenter, jbeegs882, said the boy began pushing an opponent after the whistle; other commenters disputed that description. A commenter using the name Nissa claimed five Mustang players had been in trouble during the previous game for language and dirty play. These comments are unverified. Colbert says the team forfeited the later playoff game. Meik McClinton, who posted the sideline video, wrote that the team gave up a chance to reach the championship and congratulated the Jr. Blues. The team’s Facebook page had previously posted that the Mustangs won 28–12 and were advancing to the playoffs. The footage appears to show the Seaman High School game-field area; Sunrise Optimist lists Seaman High School Game Field among its league locations, and the school is at 4850 NW Rochester Road. Sunrise Optimist’s public football page says season records set tournament brackets, but the page does not explain the ejection or suspension rule at issue. The materials reviewed did not include a public response from the league or the coach.
