The European Union has designated the Pan-Arctic Cable as a flagship infrastructure project, creating the first direct subsea internet connection between Europe and Greenland with plans to eventually extend through Canada to Japan and South Korea, bypassing the United States entirely. The EU has already invested $119 million toward Greenland’s connectivity and the cable project. The initiative reflects growing European concerns about both geopolitics and infrastructure vulnerability: over 90% of Europe-Asia communications run through undersea cables in the Red Sea, a route increasingly threatened by Houthi attacks, while Russian and Chinese-linked vessels have been linked to cable severing incidents in the Baltic Sea and near Taiwan. The project comes as US-European relations remain strained following Trump administration trade wars and its pro-Russia stance on Ukraine. A separate transatlantic cable directly linking Europe to Canada, named the Leif Erikson system, is also in development.

Snowtunnel, an Australian company, is building the world’s first full-scale revolving snow tunnel in Braybrook, a suburb of Melbourne. The structure measures 12.5 meters high and 16 meters in diameter, providing around 600 square meters of continuously rideable terrain inside a rotating snow-covered cylinder. Skiers and snowboarders descend as the slope moves toward them, eliminating the need for lifts or tow systems. The main tunnel has been manufactured and delivered to the site, with construction crews now assembling the structure alongside a dedicated snow room using real snow produced by all-weather snow system specialists TechnoAlpin. Rider testing is expected in early 2027, with a planned public opening later that year.

Researchers at the University of Michigan and Paul Scherrer Institute have developed a physics-based Bayesian framework that can identify radioactive materials, estimate their activity within two percentage points of true values, and pinpoint their location within two meters during a single six-second helicopter flyover. Previous methods required hours or days of computation to generate the spectral templates needed for analysis. The team solved this by splitting the radiation journey into two parts, atmospheric scattering and aircraft scattering, allowing simulations that once took hours to run in microseconds. In field tests in Switzerland, the method successfully identified single and mixed radioactive sources from 30 meters altitude, even with weak and heavily distorted signals. In a radiological emergency, such capabilities could help first responders determine evacuation zones and protective measures in real time. The research is published in Nature Communications.

Shanghai Jiao Tong University signed a $405 million construction contract for China’s Deep-Sea All-Weather Resident Floating Research Facility, the world’s first mobile, self-sustaining artificial island. The semi-submersible twin-hull platform measures 138 meters long and 85 meters wide, with its main deck 45 meters above water, keeping laboratories clear even in 20-meter waves. Its maximum displacement of 74,000 tonnes approaches that of a large aircraft carrier. It can cruise at 11 knots while supporting over 200 researchers, operates in sea state 7, and is built to survive typhoons up to Force 17 on the Extended Beaufort Scale. Six onboard laboratories will focus on deep-sea equipment, typhoon detection, and marine ecosystem observation. Delivery is expected by June 2030, and the facility will be open to global research institutions.

A drop-in replacement for standard electric water heater elements has been developed that contains 20 ASIC Bitcoin mining chips drawing up to 600W. The chips run at 34 trillion hash calculations per second, and the heat they generate warms the water tank rather than being wasted. Water cooling keeps the chips stable, since water conducts heat far more efficiently than air. A companion app monitors tank temperature, hashrate, and earnings, and learns usage patterns to ensure hot water is ready when needed. Heatbit, the company behind the device, estimates earnings of approximately $1.35 per day before electricity costs. The first batch is priced at $899, shipping in Q1 2027, with subsequent units at $1,299, compared to around $180 for a comparable conventional element.

The Pentagon’s Defense Intelligence Agency released the first high-resolution image of China’s classified reusable spaceplane, photographed in orbit in 2024 by a Maxar commercial imaging satellite. The vehicle features delta wings, payload bay doors, a dark heat shield, and rear-mounted solar arrays, a design closely mirroring the US Space Force’s X-37B. China has launched four spaceplane missions since 2020, with the fourth currently in orbit after launching in February 2026. The vehicle has demonstrated the ability to deploy and recapture a sub-satellite using what appears to be a robotic arm. The DIA report also warns that China may field space-based directed energy weapons by the late 2020s, and already operates multiple ground-based laser systems capable of disrupting satellites in low-Earth orbit.

Fraunhofer IGB has developed an Edge Device that connects to existing biogas plant control systems and layers AI-driven operational optimization on top without requiring changes to current infrastructure. The device consolidates sensor data, operating histories, electricity price forecasts, and weather data to recommend when a plant should store gas and when it should run its combined heat and power unit to maximize revenue. With a 2027 amendment to Germany’s Renewable Energy Sources Act expected to reward flexible generation, biogas plants will increasingly need to supply electricity specifically when solar and wind output is low. Germany operates nearly 10,000 biogas plants, and for many, the timing of grid feed-in will determine economic viability. The system processes all data locally without requiring cloud transfer, giving operators full control over what leaves the plant.

Researchers at Nanyang Technological University have developed a solar-powered device that generates hydrogen from seawater while breaking down hydrazine, a highly toxic industrial wastewater pollutant. The device combines a perovskite photocathode that generates its own electricity from sunlight with a special anode catalyst that degrades hydrazine into nitrogen gas rather than producing oxygen, a process that requires significantly less energy than conventional electrolysis. In tests, the device produced hydrogen at 466 micromoles per square centimeter per hour, reduced hydrazine concentration from 1.6% by weight to 0.5 parts per billion in 30 hours, and operated stably for over 72 hours without external power. The system is designed specifically for hydrazine-contaminated industrial wastewater rather than general seawater electrolysis, and remains at proof-of-concept stage. The research is published in Nature Communications.

Nuclear power plants are designed to run at steady output around the clock, but the growth of solar and wind energy has created a mismatch with modern grid needs. Researchers at the University of Central Florida have studied how thermal energy storage systems can bridge this gap by absorbing excess heat from a nuclear reactor and storing it until demand and electricity prices are higher. Instead of cycling on and off, which stresses equipment, or producing unwanted power during low-demand periods, a TES-integrated plant can store heat during solar peak hours and dispatch it in the evening when solar output drops and prices rise. The study focuses on next-generation molten salt reactors, which the researchers see as an opportunity to incorporate TES from the ground up. The research is published in the Journal of Energy Resources Technology. 📷 Getty Images
