SF Compute CEO @evanjconrad explains why Anthropic winning the AI race could spell disaster for GPU cloud providers: "I don’t think the clouds are gonna blow up suddenly or AI is doomed. But it doesn’t matter what I think. It matters what a lender thinks." "Their biggest customers are ones who themselves want to be the GPU cloud. The frontier labs, the hyperscalers, the people who have investment-grade credit, will simply try to disintermediate you if they have the opportunity to." "What if Anthropic just wins, and the clouds can’t sell to Anthropic because Anthropic just wants to do this, and they’re stuck selling to these other competitors who might die." "Is that true? I don’t think that’s necessarily true. But this is the scenario that people are worried about." @sfcompute

SF Compute CEO @evanjconrad reveals why the world's AI compute is already sold out: "Most AI labs think, I’m being asked for a really big prepayment by all of these different clouds. It must be because I don’t have leverage or I’m not a good negotiator." "What they don’t know is, no, the cluster you’re buying does not exist. All the clusters that have been built are sold. That cloud has to go get debt for that new cluster." "Most AI labs don’t connect the I have to do a big prepayment to the debt markets are freezing up. But it’s one-to-one." "You can still get some Hopper, and you can still get some Ampere. But if you want Blackwells, yeah, they’re sold out. In part because the Blackwells weren’t made until you ordered them. Very few people speculatively built Blackwells. Lots of people speculatively built Hoppers." "In Hoppers, the cloud builds a cluster, then the cloud sells the cluster. Blackwells, the customer signed a contract, then the cloud built the cluster. So every Blackwell cluster, for the most part, is spoken for." @sfcompute

Pretty much. As of the past few weeks, debt markets have almost entirely shut off access to money for any company that doesn’t have substantial revenue independent of AI data centers. SpaceX closed $40B of debt for GPUs, but we’re investment grade and have Starlink & launch revenue. That means the 200+ neoclouds are going to see guppy-level death and consolidation. Some will make it through, but not many.

SF Compute CEO @evanjconrad advises AI founders to raise 10X more capital than planned, potentially $1 billion, just to secure compute: "I would raise as much money as I can. I would take your round and I would add 10X to it. And if I was an investor, I would buy compute instead." "I would either try to find a big investment grade normal company that I can partner with and use their balance sheet to co-sign on the lease with me, or I would try to raise the biggest round I possibly can, so I’m above the bar." "If you’re trying to raise a round, I think you should try and raise like a billion dollars. I know. That’s the problem. This is why the article was called End of Startups. I don’t think many people can raise a billion dollar round." "If you don’t fix the debt problem, most of the portfolios of various venture firms are gonna consolidate or get wiped out, or they will convert into basically GPU clouds." @sfcompute

SF Compute CEO @evanjconrad reveals why some AI startups are being asked to pay up to 5 years of GPU compute costs upfront just to secure computing power: "Many new clusters are being asked for investment-grade credit, which startups don’t have. So to make up for that fact, you’re instead asked for a big prepayment." "Now it’s not the first month up front, it’s 100% prepayment. Somewhere between 30 and 100%. We’ve seen 100%." "You are asked to pay for a three to five-year contract on a supercomputer with all the cash up front. That’s a death knell for startups." @sfcompute

SF Compute CEO @evanjconrad explains why GPU clusters are bad collateral for lenders: "This article was more of a prediction of a trend that is already happening. I probably should’ve said, currently, most startups cannot buy compute. It is only getting harder and harder and harder." "If you want to finance a GPU cluster, you need to first have collateral, which is typically the hardware itself. The problem with that collateral is nobody wants to buy the hardware. They want to buy the hardware in a data center that’s operated by a company that works." "And the situation in which you recoup that hardware is often the situation in which the person operating that hardware is just as likely to blow up. There’s a lot of correlated risk." "If you are the startup trying to buy a cluster, to the eyes of a lender, you look like you’re gonna blow up." @sfcompute

FCC Chairman @BrendanCarrFCC warns superintelligence could supercharge cyberattacks on America's networks and explains how the FCC is fighting back: "This is a significant work stream at the FCC. We have a SCIF, a secure facility just down the hall from me here. I spend a lot of time in that." "There’s this traditional foreign bad actors that are constantly looking to push and prod and work their way into our network infrastructure. But superintelligence is just gonna supercharge the ability of people to try to launch cyberattacks, and we’re very cognizant of that." "President Trump has stood up the SI force. Scott Kupor’s got a piece of this from OPM, and Chairman Ferguson at the Federal Trade Commission has a piece of this." "We just had a meeting on this, and we are working very hard on the stepwise challenges that superintelligence is gonna bring to securing our network." "Historically, the mindset in government was, what is our authority? Let’s adopt rules and regulations. It’s a multi-year process. But that’s too slow. The attack vectors right now, powered by SI, change hourly and daily." "We need to be in constant touch with C-suites telling, here’s what we’re seeing. What are you seeing? What change are you gonna make?" @FCC

SITUATION EXPLAINED: OpenAI says its AI cracked 3 major open problems in math, computer science, and physics at once. • The math result claims to prove "local smoothing" for waves in every dimension, which would settle the Kakeya, Stein restriction, and Bochner-Riesz conjectures together • That would turn Hong Wang's 3D Kakeya proof, which won a Fields Medal this year, into a special case • The CS result refutes the exponential time hypothesis, the belief that problems like 3-SAT always take exponential time • Hundreds of papers rely on that assumption, and OpenAI says the proof was checked in Lean • The physics result claims existence proofs for 4D Yang-Mills, QCD, and a grand unified theory, but not the mass gap needed for the $1M Millennium Prize • A group led by Nobel laureate David Gross is reviewing the physics proof, and its materials haven't been released • OpenAI says it won't seek academic credit for discoveries made by its internal models @theojaffee: "Don't defer to the experts on releasing materials. You can defer to them on how you should communicate your results, but I don't see any legitimate reason for academics to block the result of a major math or science thing just because they want to."

SITUATION EXPLAINED: Google DeepMind just launched Genie 4, a world model that builds interactive worlds you can walk into, with sound. • You describe a scene or upload a photo, and Genie 4 generates a world you can move through in real time • It now generates its own audio, from ambient sound and music to characters that talk back • You can reshape the world mid-session with text, like changing the weather or adding a person • Google is also using it to simulate robot tasks, like Apptronik’s Apollo humanoid playing checkers • Google says visuals and object permanence can still drift during longer sessions • It's a research preview for now, coming first to Google AI Ultra subscribers through a waitlist @theojaffee: "I predict that I’m going to use these things basically as much as I use LLMs today."

SITUATION EXPLAINED: Palmer Luckey says it's "humiliating" that he can't buy an American-made computer, so Anduril is building one. • Anduril and Qualcomm's BlueChip is a rugged laptop for the military, government, and first responders, with orders opening in 2027 • Its Snapdragon X processor is made at TSMC's new fab in Arizona • About 90% of its parts by cost come from the US or allies, and Anduril says it's working toward 100% • Anduril will assemble the circuit boards at Arsenal-1, its new weapons factory in Ohio • Today, about 3/4 of laptops are assembled in China, and chips from Apple, AMD, and Qualcomm are mostly made by TSMC in Taiwan @theojaffee: "This is cool and all, but they can't manufacture all of the components in America. Is it just assembling it in America? Like, they're not manufacturing the chips and the memory here, are they? If they do, that would be cool."
