You can literally read what an AI is thinking before it answers. Delete a single neuron and watch it forget the number 2. An algorithm called ACDC ablates neurons one by one until only the sparse circuit performing the exact logic remains. The same interpretability technique now running on every major LLM to decode what transformer layers think before generating a token.
Train an encoder to group neurons that fire together, make it sparse, then reconstruct the original hidden layer with a decoder. The output is a vector of what the AI was focusing on when it made its decision. Push "7" toward "3" in the latent space and the network changes its answer with identical input. In 2024, researchers did the same to the human hippocampus - a neural prosthetic stimulating memory circuits altered performance by over 22%.
