The entire Python 2 vs. Python 3 fiasco is a story of "you had one job". A programming language *must* protect its user's investment in their code. I find it remarkably ironic, how Python used the worst practice, while trying to push its users to better practices... #python2

I just upgraded my Dell XPS 13 to #Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Focal Fossa) 🐅 which has #Python3 by default. 🐍 The python included in the base system is Python 3.8. 🚀 #Python2 has been moved to universe repository and is not included by default in any new installs. 🎉 CC @Ubuntu @ThePSF

We had a script written on #python2, now need to convert to #python3 to run eye tracking experiment. Thanks to @peerherholz advice to use #2to3 that reads py2.x source code & applies 'fixers' into py3.x code! Horray, save the efforts for 'spot the difference across 550lines' 🧵

Some people want to throw a party when #Python 2.7 expires at the end of the year. I won't be one of them. The pain inflicted on existing users will be real. Some of the wonderful 2.7 ecosystem will be lost forever. That said, 3.8 will be excellent too.

#Python2.7 was an excellent release and it took many, many iterations for Python 3 to catch-up. Arguably, 3.6.1 was the first release that was better than 2. When 3.8 arrives, it will be a clear, all-around winner.

This Blog by #GangBoard describe a detailed comparison of #Python2 Vs #Python3. Python 2 is steadier and more translucent version. Python 3 is to manage the design defects in the earlier versions.
