🍾 After a year of intensive building, I’m thrilled to officially announce the launch of @IMIpolicy. IMI is a new think tank that goes beyond research and white papers – we’re also building video games, simulations, and experiences to better communicate complex policy issues.

RT @RiniSampath: A group of us have been working to bring together people who want a little more common sense from DC government. We’re still kicking around names, but we know what we want to do: help shape our city’s future, support commonsense candidates, and push for a government that gets the basics right. We’re getting together over drinks on Tuesday, November 17 at 6 PM at The Golden Age. Come meet the group and help shape what comes next! RSVP:

Even if you disagree with our opinions, the reality is that DC has a political vacuum for those of us who don’t identify with either extreme. I’ve seen you suggest that people who hold different views from you and the far left faction in DC somehow aren’t Democrats. Many of us have spent years serving Democratic administrations, staffing campaigns, contributing to the party and fighting for its values. We love this party and want it to do better, for the people it’s supposed to serve. Unfortunately, the city’s far-left movement has alienated people like me. Not because we don’t care about equity or progressive values, but because too often, ideological purity takes precedence over thoughtful debate, practical solutions and whether government actually delivers for people. I’m determined to help build a home for a commonsense faction in DC. One that welcomes disagreement, values good ideas regardless of where they come from and puts our city’s future first. And I mean it when I say this: you’re welcome in that big tent, too.

RT @joshjacobsondc: DC ATEs only fine if you are >11 mph over speed limit. In a residential area, that means going 36 in a 25. Getting hit by a car going 36 mph has ~2x the force and ~3x the likelihood of death. My wife and I have never received a moving violation - it really isn’t that hard!
    David Weigel @daveweigel
Rarely disagree w MY on safety issues but DC machine-guns people with $100 tickets for minor violations that put nobody in danger. It’s ridiculous and a lot of people just ignore the tickets.

Critics said robotaxis would crush rideshare drivers. But 2 years of data from 5 robotaxi cities says they’re crushing something else: Uber's rent-seeking. In AV cities, rideshare companies are paying drivers more. Yet DC’s next mayor wants to hit pause. 🧵

Rideshare drivers are faring better and earning better fares in cities with AVs. Uber and Lyft now keep a $1.64 cut from the typical SF ride. In cities without AVs, TNCs keep a cut of $3.54. I dug into new @gridwise_io data on what’s happening to drivers in AV cities.

Another interesting tidbit: TNCs are changing how they pay drivers in cities with AVs. Rideshare drivers in AV cities are earning higher per-trip bonuses (avg $1.43), versus other drivers nationally.

DC and its incoming Mayor have to decide between: 1. Increasing competition with rideshare companies to make them treat drivers better, while charging a robot tax on AVs that'll help support drivers. 2. Maintain the status quo where drivers can barely make ends meet.

RT @ethanteicher: It isn't notable that a skeptical public would respond to a scary push poll about AVs by being skeptical. What is notable is how drastically different attitudes toward AVs are among those who have tried them or seen them on the road, vs those who haven't.

It’s natural for people have questions about AVs when they first hear about them. But when people get more information about AV safety, and especially once they take their first ride, favorability jumps meaningfully. I’ve seen it countless times engaging with communities IRL.

But a separate independent poll by a consulting firm found that 48% of D.C. residents actually support self-driving cars, with that increasing to 55% after hearing that they are involved in fewer crashes than human-driven cars.
