I'm really pleased to share how we think about protecting user privacy at @mapbox. I was part of the team that first examined these questions prior to launching our telem pipeline years ago. I'm proud of the answers we arrived at then & since.

RT @ArmandDoma: ed zitron has made like endless predictions about ai that have been proven black and white WRONG and yet he keeps getting touted as an AI expert
    Matt Slotnick @matt_slotnick
Jon Stewart having Ed Zitron on as an "AI expert" really makes me question everything I learned about the world from the Daily Show when I was 13 years old

RT @orph_: actually it's the battery that is designed like an eel lmao Volta, the inventor of the battery, was attempting to mimic the design of eels when he found a combination that worked

is anyone else bothered by the fact that there is a fish on this godforsaken planet that is designed exactly like a battery and can deliver an 800V shock

approximately all voters in DC are Democrats. A much smaller number are fans of the party committee. It's weird that the committee gets to pick replacements. (this v sweaty announcement is trying to stop procedural stuff that could let the Council choose the replacement instead)

For Halloween, I think you should get a cape. Not a cheap plastic one from Spirit Halloween, but a bespoke handmade one from Casa Seseña. When you put it on, shift your shoulders back and forth and then sweep the front edge across your shoulders, swatting anyone in close vicinity

City Cast has the best editorial taste of any DC publication and it's not particularly close

@alyssafowers tracked down 38 giant skeletons around the District. Many were standard 12-foot skeletons, but others went in … different directions. Here's which skellies stand out above the rest.

this seems like a more nuanced and trenchant threat model for how AI affects our outputs also relevant to what it means that AI is currently set to be both a historically transformative and fundamentally American technology

New Anthropic research: How AI agents shape experts' judgment calls When experts delegate work to an agent, do they still make the key decisions? We tested this in a randomized trial with 50 professional data analysts.

a lot to like in this post. recognizing the reward loop is important, but it's not how I've experienced slopification personally this suggests that productivity declines. but it doesn't. the danger is that your filter collapses; more whims get expressed

still enormously useful for rote tasks (of which there are many!) and rapid research of niche topics, though, even if I am unwilling to let it write the resulting memo for me

RT @kevinamezaga: It feels like screaming into the void, but I really hope (though I’m not expecting) that the new DC Councilmembers and Mayor focus on shoring up existing public services before making expansions of government programs. Things aren’t going well. Act like it.

RT @JKBustertruster: When I ran the Antitrust Division, we went up against the biggest companies in the world, and the teams across the table were always bigger than ours. What we had were great lawyers who knew their cases and the law cold. I kept thinking about what those lawyers could accomplish with technology that really understood their work, knew what they were trying to achieve, and met our exacting standards for judgment and intellectual rigor. Nothing on the market was fit for purpose, so we built it with an incredible team. Breakthrough tech for private and public enforcers.

this imbalance is baked into the city's status as a municipality DC is a medium-sized city with an unusually large governance portfolio (running its own DMV etc) but for the journalism industry it's indisputably one of the most important & influential places in the country
