TL/DR people do enormous damage by hiding bad news rather than communicating it. It’s always better just to say the hard to say thing.

I used to be the person companies called after they got hacked. And I noticed something early on. The hack almost never sank them. The cover-up did. Every time, the team’s instinct was the same: wait until we know more, wait until we're sure, wait until we have the perfect statement, etc. And some of the biggest companies in the world have learned what that waiting costs. In 2016, Uber got hacked. Instead of telling anyone, it paid the hackers $100K to delete the data and stay quiet, and labeled it a bug bounty. The truth came out a year later. Uber paid $148M to settle with all 50 states, and its former security chief was criminally convicted. That same year, Yahoo revealed that a 2014 breach had exposed 500M accounts. The news landed in the middle of Verizon buying the company. Verizon cut $350M off the price. And in 2017, Equifax discovered a breach affecting over 140M Americans, then waited 40 days to tell the public. During that window, an executive who'd figured out what happened sold nearly $1M in stock. He went to prison for insider trading. Meanwhile, hackers don't wait. They post your data. They email your customers directly. And when customers hear it from a stranger first, that trust is gone for good. Telling customers early doesn't mean admitting fault. It can be as simple as: "We found suspicious activity. We're investigating. Here's what you should do right now. We'll update you as we learn more." On Tuesday, I'm sharing the exact framework I'd use to write that email if I were in your shoes. Follow and turn on notifications so it's there when you need it. Customers will forgive you for getting hacked. Most of them expect it by now. What they won't forgive is finding out you knew and said nothing.

Uber is so fucking shady. The so called “People’s First Transportation Alliance” is actually funded by Uber. A more accurate name would have been the Uber First Transportation Alliance. They are hiding the fact that they’re funding this anti-autonomy group, and listed a bunch of “founding members” of the group that had no clue their names were being used! They just organized a protest against a bill that would bring autonomous driving to DC in 2028, demanding human drivers be required well past then. DC is such a critical city for autonomy, because we need congress to be able to try the technology for themselves. The fact that they can’t is holding federal autonomy legislation back. Fuck Uber and everyone involved in this group. They want people to die so they can make money continuing to exploit their drivers.

RT @MTSlive: Boom Supersonic CEO @bscholl explains why we got Star Trek's iPads but not its warp drives: "Star Trek Next Generation, touchscreens, everyone’s walking around with an iPad. We got that, but we didn’t get the photon torpedoes, we didn’t get the warp drive. We got all the low energy sci-fi, but we didn’t get the high energy sci-fi." "Thomas Edison flipped the switch on the very first electric grid in 1882. From 1882 through to 1973, there was exponential increase in power production per capita, doubling about every 11 years. And then in 1973, something went wrong, and that trend stopped." "Since the year 2000, our population has increased faster than our energy. The amount of energy available to the average American is actually less now than it was 26 years ago." "We’ve shipped all the manufacturing to Asia. I think we all know now that was a terrible idea. China’s got three times the energy production of the US." "The way to bring it back is not bring it back, but invent the next generation of manufacturing technology here. We’re gonna need a lot of power for that. And of course, AI." @boomsupersonic

RT @BillAckman: Premise: Incentives drive all human behavior. The corollary: How to destroy a country: A vast social security and support system that serves as a magnet for those who would rather not work. An open immigration policy that does not screen immigrants to determine their ability and willingness to provide for themselves and their families. An open immigration policy that does not screen for political and/or religious ideologies that are a threat to the country. Economic incentives large enough to incentivize immigrants on the state dole to have large numbers of children, but insufficient for educated and economically productive mothers to be able to quit to raise a family. The declining fertility of the most educated and productive women due to their delay to begin a family as a result of their desire and/or need to advance their careers, among other reasons, to live a life they deem consistent with their educational achievements and/or to repay their student debts. Amnesty programs that give citizenship and voting power to illegal immigrants without consideration of their economic productivity or their threat to the country due to their religious or political ideologies. The changing demographics and increased population due to the above factors. The state responding to protests by increasing social support. The continued failure to punish and hold accountable violent and looting rioters. Government managed by a massive and growing unelected bureaucracy. Government fraud, waste, and abuse contributed to ballooning budgets. Anti-business legislation that makes it difficult for businesses to compete in a global marketplace being disrupted by AI, including restrictions on firing even poorly performing employees. Overly burdensome, globally uncompetitive, corporate taxation. Continuous increases in personal taxes to raise funds to provide for the rapidly growing welfare state. The substantial majority of the tax burden levied on a small percentage of the population. A growing percentage of the electorate paying no taxes and receiving welfare. The introduction or threat of a wealth tax including the taxation of unrealized gains, i.e., taxes on paper wealth. The flight of the most productive business builders and highest taxpayers to lower tax countries with lesser security concerns. A growing percentage of the electorate voting for candidates that support increased welfare and laws favorable to, and/or that match the cultural and ideological needs and desires of a growing unproductive immigrant population. The rapid rise in anti-semitism and inadequate efforts to address this hatred. Increased borrowing by the state to fund the growing social burden. Higher sovereign interest rates due to all of the above. The resulting need to reduce expenditures to make the math work. Increasingly violent protests that make life less livable for the productive and law abiding citizens leading to their accelerated departure. And so on…

RT @munster_gene: This week @elonmusk challenged the industry and @bscholl @boomsupersonic delivered. On Tuesday’s $SPCX earnings call, Elon talked about how to quicken the pace to get power up and running: “Casting is the real bottleneck. And if anything, it seems to be getting worse. So that means that SpaceX can bring power on line 12 to 18 months faster than anyone else. That's the kind of advantage that's difficult to replicate unless someone else is doing advanced casting". Today, Boom announced the world's first all-digital foundry to cast single crystal turbine blades and vanes. Congrats to Blake and the Boom team on the huge milestone. We’re thrilled to be investors in both @boomsupersonic and @SpaceX, solving AI’s biggest bottleneck and reindustrializing America.

RT @MTSlive: Boom Supersonic CEO @bscholl reveals why most data center water usage comes from cooling turbines, not servers, and how his new turbine doesn't need a single drop: "Number one is you just can’t get power from the grid, so now you gotta get turbines. Can’t get turbines without waiting for years or paying exorbitant prices on the secondary market." "The public’s got concerns. If you’re gonna pull electricity from the grid, our electricity price is gonna go up. What about water usage? The dirty little secret is that most data center water usage isn’t the server cooling, it’s actually the turbine cooling. This turbine doesn’t need a drop of water, and it lets you make your own electricity." "The third thing is noise. We’re gonna make this an ultra quiet turbine. It’s from the same team that made sonic boom go away entirely, so I’m pretty sure we can make a turbine quiet too." @boomsupersonic
