The Prime Minister has unveiled what he called "everyday savings" to help ease the cost of living crisis ahead of tomorrow's budget.
Andy Burnham has revealed tariffs will be reduced on a range of food items including chocolate, baked beans and gherkins.
The Treasury said the average family would save £21 a year. The Conservatives described it as "cheaper gherkins" and an "insult to families".

So relieved that gherkins are going to be cheaper, particularly given that I like dunking them in marmalade, also to be reduced. Winner winner vomit dinner 🤣🤣🤣
No matter what happens in the budget tomorrow, it will all be sold as a win for British citizens.
It's just bullshit spin to appease what labour voters want to hear. In the real world none of the already spoken about savings will have any major impact for struggling families. FUCKING gherkins, marmalade and whatever else is duty reduced is not helping hungry people put food in their stomachs.
I can say this because I am one of them, this country has failed and war is more important than a domestic crisis. Shame on the Tories and labour governments, incompetent blood sucking CUNTS!!!
'So, Chancellor. Are you going to cut taxes, reduce red tape, shrink the bloated public sector and get the economy moving again?'
Even better than that, dear...GHERKINS!
😂 Nick Ferrari bursts out laughing as Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds is forced to sell the latest government gimmick live on @LBC
Reynolds looked thoroughly embarrassed as he tried to sell the plan to scrap import tariffs on a list of “everyday essentials”.
When Ferrari asked him which products were included and what the actual savings would be, Reynolds immediately started dampening expectations, sheepishly admitting these were “not huge reductions” before reeling off the list: baked beans, chocolate, gherkins…
That’s as far as he got. Ferrari could not contain himself and burst out laughing. 😭
Nick then pointed out that the Conservatives have called the projected saving of £21 per year “derisory”.
You could see Reynolds was mortified reading it out. Imagine the brief he opened this morning and realised he had to go on air and sell this to the public. 😬
What a farce. Even on the government’s own figures, this works out at roughly 40p a week for the average household. Forty pence a week. You lucky people.
Another pointless gimmick that will have zero material impact on people’s lives.
Baked beans and gherkins is that the staple food of the British family?
John Healey somehow thinks so ....
Healey's budget being sold as relief for working people has put up adult minimum wage 3.9%
But the headlines "FIVE MEASURES" include scrapping tariffs on GHERKINS AND BAKED BEANS , plus an alcohol duty rise adding about 2 pence to a pint .
The Tories are having a field day " cheaper gherkins " they say " an insult to families"
Labour's defending it as costs on everyday items .
Whether that lands as pragmatism or tone deafness probably depends on whose shopping basket and who's pub you're looking at ...
🚨 NEW: Andy Burnham has announced five "everyday fixes" ahead of the Budget
1. Carer's Allowance will be changed so carers no longer lose their entire benefit when they earn over the limit - instead, their support will reduce by £1 for every extra £1 they earn
2. Import tariffs will be removed on more than 100 products, including baked beans, chocolate and gherkins, to save households up to £21 on their food shop a year
3. Tax-free mileage rates for workers using their own cars will be made permanent at 55p per mile for the first 10,000 miles, with the rate for additional miles rising from 25p to 35p
4. Parental pay will be extended to over 150,000 more parents a year, including self-employed fathers and partners
5. Hundreds more Post Office drop boxes will be rolled out to save people queueing at branches
Are we going to get an app to show us where the cheapest gherkins are? @andyburnham

The Chancellor will remove import taxes on gherkins and marmalade to give British families more breathing space in their weekly budget.
I am sat here wantonly dipping my gherkin in my marmalade feel grateful and blessed
Cunts
🚨"Garlic, gherkins, chocolate coated wafers, boiled sweets, toffees, caramels, citrus jams and marmalades and fruit pastilles..."
@JuliaHB1 mocks the tariff cuts on gherkins and similar items the Chancellor says will give families £21 of "breathing space".
£3 TRILLION in debt—and the big triumph?
A penny off gherkins! 🥒
Families are struggling, bills are soaring, but here’s the grand plan: cheaper pickles!
Put the giant gherkin down and stop treating taxpayers like fools.
Britain needs leadership, not pickle-sized PR!CK !
100 days ago, I promised to do things differently.
From cutting everyday costs to handing power back to communities, change is already underway.
But I know there’s much more to do - this is just the beginning.
energy bills going UP by £250, from historical highs, so the Chancellor pulls all the stop to remove tariffs on gherkins so we can save £21 per year.
And you take them seriously.
