We are not slowing down. 🚀 Our Artemis III mission will send four astronauts to low Earth orbit next year to test critical systems needed for future lunar landings and we’re accelerating efforts to ensure the success of Artemis IV, the first Artemis mission on the lunar surface

Have a research idea that could advance NASA science? 🔬 NASA plans to release ROSES-27 by January 2027, with over 50 research opportunities spanning astrophysics, Earth science, planetary science, heliophysics, space biology and more. Start planning:

To prepare for NASA’s Artemis IV mission to land astronauts on the lunar surface, SpaceX and Blue Origin have updated their concepts of operations for its landers. These landers — Starship and Blue Moon — have concepts of operations different from one another. More below ⬇️

SpaceX’s Starship HLS will rendezvous and dock with the Orion spacecraft and its crew in low Earth orbit. Similar to a gas station on Earth, a series of propellant “tanker” Starships will transfer propellant to the waiting “depot” Starship.

While Orion is docked with Starship, Starship will perform a trans-lunar injection burn to bring the connected spacecraft to lunar orbit. Starship will bring two astronauts to the lunar surface for several days before delivering them back to Orion for the ride back to Earth.

NASA shared space images from Mars.

This view just hits different 🌍 @Astro_Christina and @astro_reid take a moment to look back at Earth as they continue deep into space toward the Moon.

A gorgeous galaxy marks the spot in this image, but the real treasure is the gravitational lens in the lower-right corner, where a distant background galaxy is being magnified and distorted by the gravity of a closer galaxy:

Are you stepping into a spacesuit this week? So are @astro_anil and @astro_kutryk — but not for Halloween! Tune in here on Oct. 29 at 6:30am ET (1030 UTC) to watch these two astronauts deploy a new solar array on the @Space_Station.

NASA just shared some major updates on the road ahead for Artemis 🚀 2027: Artemis III tests Orion and two lunar landers in low Earth orbit. 2028: Artemis IV returns Americans to the Moon. Catch up on today's announcements in this special edition NASA Minute!

Through powerful stellar winds, these young glittering stars at the center pushed away most of the gas from which they were born, creating this central void that offers a ghostly appearance in this Hubble image of LHA 129-N44. Credit: ESA, NASA, D. Gouliermis. 🔭

Science operations for our Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory have now ended. With the spacecraft orbiting less than 171 miles (275 kilometers) above Earth, atmospheric drag prevents the satellite’s telescopes from steadily gazing at their cosmic targets. 🧵

Big move, bigger mission! The Artemis III Space Launch System core stage moved to the transfer aisle at NASA Kennedy. Next up – teams will lift and integrate the massive 212-foot-rocket with the solid rocket boosters as we prepare for the next giant leap in lunar exploration.

On Oct. 24, 2001, NASA's Mars Odyssey spacecraft slipped into orbit around the Red Planet. 25 years later, it's still conducting science and relaying messages from the rovers, making it the longest-operating orbiter ever at a planet beyond Earth.  ½

Thank you, Swift! ❤️ Though the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory's mission is at an end, its legacy and extensive collection of data will remain. Swift's discoveries, and the work completed in tandem with Hubble, advanced astrophysics in so many ways. Learn more ⬇️

Have you put up your Halloween decor? The night sky will add the finishing touch. 🌕 October’s full moon, named the Hunter’s Moon, will rise on the night of Oct. 26. Its name comes from the seasonal practice of hunters relying on bright moonlight.

As the sun sets on NASA's Swift mission, we celebrate more than 21 years of discoveries. Designed to catch gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), the universe's most powerful explosions, Swift revolutionized our understanding of these high-energy events and showed how they can illuminate everything from the births of black holes to the history of the early universe. But Swift's legacy extends far beyond gamma-ray bursts. Its rapid-response capabilities turned it one of astronomy's first responders, alerting observatories around the world to fleeting cosmic events and helping usher in the era of multimessenger astronomy. The mission leaves behind a remarkable scientific legacy and a wealth of data that will continue to enable discoveries for years to come.

We know our universe is expanding. But telescopes like Hubble measure an expansion rate that’s faster than predicted, based on models of the early universe. Here’s how @NASARoman will join the quest on cracking the case of this “Hubble Tension” ⬇️
