Do you like this #explodingdots approach to analysing 0.9999.... ? (It's a place value chart. Ten dots in any one box is equivalent to one dot, one place to the left. Adding a dot and an antidot (that is, a "tod," as kids beautifully call ia) to any box adds nothing.)

Classic: 8 dots in a box. A "move" takes two dots in a box and shifts one 1 place left, one 1 place right. Repeat over and over again. Is it obvious this game has to stop? What final configurations of dots are possible? #explodingdots (If you like, this is a base 1 machine!)

Anu has a curious way to convert numbers to binary. She writes the number at right of the page, keeps halving, ignoring fractions, writing the answers to the left. Then beneath each odd number she sees, she writes 1 and 0 beneath each even. Why does this work? #explodingdots.
