A classic (admittedly cumbersome) way to multiply. Write two numbers at top. Keep halving left number, ignoring remainders, while doubling right numbers. Cross out all the rows with even numbers to the left, add surviving numbers on the right. Sum = product. Why? (#explodingdots)

The picture shows that 2^6 - 1 (which is 111111 in base 2) factors and so is not prime. Not so much a puzzle today, but just an observation: Can you now see that 2^n - 1 won't ever be prime if n is composite? #explodingdots @GlobalMathProj Try listing some factors of 2^300 -1.
