    Was reading the score-centering RL paper to add some notes on it the my book, and they have a great table in the appendix on the different importance sampling based train-inference mismatch methods in RL. These have been the biggest focus of RL algorithm research since the GRPO takeoff, imo.

    A single integer decision, repeated, becomes an entire forest. Fractal trees arise from one recursive rule: at every endpoint, two new branches leave at a fixed angle, each a little shorter than the one before. The pattern is self-similar at every scale. Bresenham’s algorithm draws each of those branches on a pixel grid using only integer additions and comparisons. It decides the next step by tracking an error term, never needing floating-point arithmetic or division. The organic form is simply disciplined recursion meeting the quiet precision of whole numbers.

    Our #Calgorithm Condensed Game of Historical Significance on Independence Day celebrates the Axe’s independence from Stanfurd as we revisit the greatest Big Game upset of all time, the 89th Big Game of 1986. 1-9 Cal manages to defeat 7-2 Gator Bowl-bound 16th ranked Stanfurd.

    Slight variation from our normal #Calgorithm programming. I received the sheet music from the staff of BC’s marching band and was able to finish arranging “For Boston” to use in my project later, but I figured there’s no reason #BCBC Twitter can’t enjoy it now. For the Cal fans not in the know, it was the first American college fight song ever written, and I really like it. Go Bears and Go Eagles. @NewtonJedi

    Why does a simple line sometimes take longer to learn than a whole forest of trees? Different algorithms scale differently with data. Linear models solve a system whose cost grows with features cubed, while trees and forests often grow more gently with samples. k-NN skips training entirely, then pays later at prediction time. Neural nets trade both for capacity. Choosing the right complexity keeps models usable on real data instead of theoretical ones. The fastest algorithm on paper is useless if it cannot finish before the world changes. Which complexity trade-off have you hit hardest in practice?
