On Monday, we sent a letter directly to Maricopa County Recorder Justin Heap and the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors to alert them about an instance of voter confusion our staff encountered at an early voting center in downtown Phoenix.

Recorder Heap's only response was a press release publicly criticizing the ACLU of Arizona. Read the letter and our statement here:

We reached out to elections officials to ensure voters receive accurate information to cast their ballot and know their vote will be counted. If you run into issues or have questions while voting, contact the Election Protection Hotline at 1-866-OUR-VOTE (1-866-687-8683).

We were proud to join @LUCHA_AZ, @opinorg, @OVOV_AZ, @CommonCause & partners this morning to remind the Maricopa Board of Supervisors & Recorder Justin Heap that they must protect every voter, count every vote, and certify the results regardless of who wins.

We recently sent a letter to every county election official in AZ to remind them that it is illegal for ICE agents, federal troops, or armed federal law enforcement to be deployed to any polling place.

The results of this investigation should come as no surprise -- Arizona has some of the strictest laws in the nation when it comes to ensuring that only eligible voters can vote. Those suggesting otherwise are trying to undermine trust & spread confusion.

The letters were sent because of a newly effective state law that requires elections officials to compare voter registration data with the driver license database. In this round, even minor discrepancies in addresses were flagged (eg,"Street" vs. "St." or "Unit 1" vs. "#1").

BREAKING: Glendale will no longer criminalize panhandling — a win for free speech and the rights of people experiencing poverty. But the reversal only came after we sued the city and forced the issue. It should never be a crime to ask for help.

An empty Pima County prison is being eyed as a possible ICE detention center. Given ICE’s troubling track record of human rights abuses in detention, we’re calling for transparency, oversight and a halt to expanding a harmful system.
