Barack Obama @BarackObamaIt is a basic principle of American democracy that the government canβt selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say. But thatβs exactly what the Trump Administration is doing to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota. To understand why this is so appalling, itβs important to know the facts. Congresswoman Omar came to this country with her father when she was 12 years old. Five years later, her father became a naturalized citizen. If Ilhan had been 18 at the time, she would have had to apply for citizenship separately. But because she was 17, she became a naturalized citizen automatically. Congresswoman Omar went on to graduate from college, work as a community organizer, become the first Somali-American legislator elected to public office in the U.S., and win a seat in Congress. There, she has been one of the Trump Administrationβs fiercest critics, which has led the president to repeatedly single her out as someone who he believes does not belong in this country. Now the Administration is actively trying to deport Congresswoman Omar, seemingly based solely on the unsubstantiated theory that she was actually 18 when her father was naturalized, and therefore is not a citizen. Federal agents have raided her home, confiscated personal records, and seized her phone β all to try and uncover a nonexistent smoking gun from 20 years ago that will somehow make their case. Think about that. The full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticize the president. And itβs not the first time this has happened. Under President Trump, the Justice Department has repeatedly gone after those he considers his political enemies β from the Attorney General of New York, to the former head of the FBI, to members of the Federal Reserve. In those cases, the prosecutions either stalled or were dismissed for having no basis in law, and the same is likely to happen in this case. But not before Congresswoman Omarβs life has been turned upside down, her legal bills have piled up, and sheβs been forced to spend time fighting unsubstantiated charges instead of serving the people of Minnesota. The fact that any president, or any administration, is willing to engage in such transparent efforts to intimidate someone should outrage all Americans, regardless of how they feel about Congresswoman Omarβs political views. Because if this becomes the new normal, thereβs no reason to believe it will stop with her β or that future presidents, in either party, wonβt do the same.

Fox News @FoxNewsA low-key mall outing? Not exactly. Rep. Ilhan Omar is seen strolling through Minneapolisβ largest Somali mall, surrounded by security guards, in her first public appearance since federal agents raided her Washington, D.C., home. The Minnesota Democrat greets supporters, poses for photos, and sits down for lunch with state Attorney General Keith Ellison at Karmel Mall of Somalia. The appearance comes as Omar faces a reported criminal investigation into allegations of immigration fraud. But the mallβs owner has a federal criminal history of his own. Lisa Murkowski @LisaForSenateWhile some may try to write this off as just how politics works now, ballot-stacking should have no place in our electoral process. Run and win on your merits: your views, your policy ideas, and your accomplishments. By contrast, recruiting candidates to manipulate the field and influence voting outcomes is simply wrong. Alaskans deserve the honest truth from Mary and her campaignβwhat has been revealed is a pattern of lies and coverups and a culture of deception that belongs nowhere in our elections or among our elected officials.

Bill Melugin @BillMelugin_BREAKING: Colleague @davidspunt reports via two sources familiar that there is an ongoing DOJ "aggressive criminal investigation" into Daniel J. Sullivan appearing on the ballot for US Senate in Alaska, and the investigation has intensified in the wake of the bombshell NYT report today. DOJ sources tell David that multiple grand jury subpoenas will be issued in the coming hours and days, and there are preservation orders to cell phone companies that are being prepared regarding text messages and emails that may build a timeline for how Daniel J. Sullivan was placed on the ballot. The investigation is being handled by the U.S. Attorney's Office in Alaska and federal prosecutors are interested in potential charges relating to the depravation of rights of Alaska voters. The investigation is expected to go beyond Election Day and has been underway for several months.

Matt Finn @MattFinnFNCNEW: LA County says a sample of the Trump admin's 200 names of suspected non-citizen voters showed that 38.9% attested to being born in the US. But in a new sworn statement under penalty of perjury, a DHS official says its investigation shows NONE of LA County's 200 names were born in the US. Β "After a thorough review of the immigration records of all the individuals on the County's Sample List, it was determined that none of the individuals USCIS matched to the County's Sample List were born in the United States according to USCIS records," -Nicolas Bartell, Associate Director of Fraud Detection at USCIS.
