Three signs a hardware wallet has been tampered with, or that someone is scamming you:
• It arrives with a seed phrase already written on a card. A real wallet generates your phrase on the device when you set it up, so nobody else should ever have seen it.
• The wallet already holds funds, or is already set up with a PIN. It should arrive blank.
• Someone asks you to type your seed phrase into a website, an app, or a “support” chat. No legitimate wallet maker will ever ask for it.
A few habits that help: buy from sellers you trust, check the packaging when it arrives, set the wallet up yourself, and write down the phrase it shows you.
