I used to over-explain character emotions. Turns out, a clenched jaw or a quiet exit says more than a paragraph ever could.

When building a character, ask: What would they never do? Then write a scene where they almost do it. Testing limits reveals depth.

I keep a cheap spiral notebook just for middle-of-the-night ideas. 2 a.m. thoughts are weirdly brilliant or total nonsense, but either way, I write them down half-asleep. Sorting through them later is a strange mix of cringe and gold.

Shift a setting detail to interrupt dialogue as the tension rises during one scene.
