RT @thesportsontap: His father grew up in Sierra Leone. His mother was born in Liberia. Both of them came close to not getting out. They made it to Iowa instead, and they raised their son in Des Moines. Tonight he helped beat the number 16 team in America. His name is Abu Sama III. Before any of the football, understand what he already was. He won the Iowa state long jump championship three years running and left high school holding the all time state record in it. Then the football. As a junior at Southeast Polk, in Pleasant Hill, he ran for 931 yards and 12 touchdowns, played defense too, and won a state title. As a senior he ran for 1,408 yards and 28 touchdowns and averaged over ten yards every single time he touched the ball. In the state championship game he ran for 372 yards and scored six touchdowns. Both are still records for that game. Southeast Polk won it again. He was the Des Moines Register Player of the Year and the Gatorade Player of the Year for the state. The recruiting services made him a three star. Iowa State took him. In November of his freshman year he got the first start of his career, on the road at Kansas State, who were ranked 19th, and it snowed the whole night. He ran for 276 yards and three touchdowns. Iowa State won 42 to 35. That is the fourth most rushing yards in a game in the history of that school and the most any freshman has ever put up there. He was named Big 12 offensive player of the week and newcomer of the week in the same week. Then it went quiet. 587 yards the following season. 732 the one after that. He left Iowa State in January with 1,933 career rushing yards and transferred to Wisconsin. Here is where his parents come back into it. The two Liberian civil wars ran across fourteen years. His mother and father lived through both of them, and Tommy Birch of the Des Moines Register wrote years ago that they came to this country wanting to give their children a better life, and that their son has run on that ever since. Be honest about tonight, because this was not the night he carried anybody. Wisconsin won 17 to 7 and the defense is the whole reason. Southern California came in at 6 and 1 and scored one touchdown. And he is a fourth year running back who has not had a day like Kansas State since he was 18 years old. But a ranked team walked into Madison tonight and walked out with seven points, and a kid whose parents got out with nothing was standing on the right side of it. Last fall, the #Badgers' porous O-line allowed pressure on 45% of all dropbacks. Through 5 games in 2026? That's down to 25%. More on why Wisconsin is already getting its money's worth from Eric Mateos:

RT @thesportsontap: When Malachi Coleman was five years old, his mother left him and his two year old sister at a stranger's house. She said she would be back. He plays wide receiver for Wisconsin now, and he has never seen her again. His father had already died. So at five, Malachi became the person responsible for keeping his sister Nevaeh alive. They went into foster care in Nebraska. They lived in three different homes. He was abused in the system. Then a couple named Craig and Miranda Coleman heard something at church and decided to become foster parents. They planned to take one child at a time. At the end of their licensing class, the agency asked whether they would consider two siblings who were about to be separated from each other. They thought about it for a couple of weeks and said yes. The kids started coming on weekends in October 2014. They moved in that January. On November 20, 2015, Craig and Miranda adopted both of them. Here is what Craig said about the boy who showed up. "He was a broken kid." Miranda said he lived for today and only today. Malachi says he was mean and selfish and would not do one kind thing for anybody. So one day Miranda argued with him about it for an hour. And at the end of it she did not ask him to become a good person. She asked him to hold a door open for one person. One door. One stranger. That was all. He has not stopped since. He holds doors for everybody now, and he will tell you that kindness is the thing he cares about most. When Nebraska started letting high school athletes earn money off their names, Malachi Coleman put his into a burrito at a local restaurant and sent a cut of it to the foster care system. He runs a foundation now that works to get kids out of foster care and into permanent homes. The football is almost the small part. He was a top 60 recruit out of Lincoln East and he stayed home and signed with the Nebraska Cornhuskers. It did not work. Eight catches as a freshman, then shoulder surgery, then nothing. He transferred to Minnesota and barely played there either. Three seasons. Thirteen catches. This year Wisconsin took him, because a coach who had him at Minnesota vouched for him. In his first game he caught four passes for 76 yards and a touchdown against Notre Dame, which was more than he gained in all of last season. Last weekend he caught a 46 yard touchdown against Michigan State. He says he faked his confidence until it became real. He got that line from his mother. A woman once sat and argued with a furious, broken kid for an hour, and then asked him to hold one door open for one stranger. Here is what he says now. "I see myself as wanted."

RT @Evan_Flood: Trailing at Penn State, Darrion Dupree dropped a third-down pass in the third quarter that would have led to a huge pickup for the #Badgers . Instead of putting his head down, Dupree got right back to work, racking up 79 total yards in the fourth quarter to spark the Wisconsin offense.
