Travel softball tryout season can feel rushed. But choosing the right team isn’t just about wins, promises of playing time, or the name on the jersey. Parents should look at coaching, development, roster fit, schedule, cost, culture, and what their daughter actually wants from the game.

How is your tournament season going? Players, coaches, parents … let’s hear about it!

Have you lost a scholarship offer, or even just a spot on a college team next year, due to the new 5-year rule? Be cautious and considerate in how you announce this. Certainly, it's appropriate to indicate your recruitment is reopened. And, it's understandable to want to clarify that it's through no fault of your own. However, "blaming" the coach or school that has released you (even subtly) probably isn't the best approach. Whether you would ever consider that coach/school again in the future or not, you will likely want (or need) to consider other coaches/schools that have taken the same action with former commits. As frustrating and unfair as it may be, demonstrate that you understand it's the reality as you move on to your next opportunity. Keep working hard and there is or will be a place for you!

RT @AvaBradshaw_6: Due to unforeseen circumstances, I am entering the transfer portal as a RHP with 3 years of eligibility remaining. Excited for the next chapter! @SoftballPortal

Serious players should watch it for education. Watch the defense. Watch the communication. Watch how elite players respond to failure. Watch what actually helps teams win. The WCWS may be the best free softball education available.

A player hitting .500 isn’t always your best hitter. And a player hitting .250 isn’t always struggling. Most travel softball stats (especially GameChanger) need context—or they’ll lead you to bad decisions. Lineups, playing time, development… all impacted.

Most travel softball coaches are trying to do the right thing. But “the right thing” isn’t always obvious, and it rarely looks fair to everyone. A closer look at the tradeoffs behind playing time, positions, and tough decisions:

Do college coaches appreciate seeing posts about putting in the work on holidays? If a player wants to hit the gym, field, or cage on a holiday, that's fine. But it doesn't seem that they should get "extra credit" for doing so, right? It's okay to take a day off.

RT @Sadiesftbll2026: Finished games this week with a W for @ElToroSoftball! Most youth softball stats aren’t nearly as reliable as they look. Small sample sizes. Inconsistent scorekeeping. False precision. Before you compare players—or question decisions—make sure you understand what the numbers actually mean.
