On Oct. 18, alumni of our Old Cities, New Challenges urban conservation courses and members of the teaching team joined us for an afternoon tea reception in Kuching. The event was held during the ICOMOS General Assembly in Malaysia. Southeast Asia faces significant challenges in conserving urban cultural heritage due to population growth, urbanization trends, intensifying tourism, economic and infrastructure development, and climate change. To help strengthen conservation practice across the region, we partnered with @mythinkcity to offer this course for Southeast Asian urban planners, architects, and associated urban conservation professionals. The course examined methodologies, practical tools, and techniques for conserving historic places. First held in Penang, Malaysia, in 2018, the course later moved online in 2021 and 2024 and concluded with in-person workshop in Kuala Lumpur in 2025. The alumni event provided an opportunity for participants to share how they have applied course learnings in their work and to strengthen professional connections across different cohorts. 🎥 A new documentary on photographic pioneer Hercule Florence highlights groundbreaking research that is deepening our understanding of his experiments with light in Brazil in the 19th century. Hercule Florence, autoportrait, produced by the @ihf_19, investigates Florence’s relentless pursuit of a photographic process and features recent scientific investigations conducted by Getty biochemist Art Kaplan and colleagues at the HERCULES Laboratory at the University of Évora, the Instituto Hercule Florence, and the Instituto Moreira Salles. Analysis by Kaplan and colleagues identified the pioneering use of gold and silver in Florence’s images, providing new material evidence of his photographic processes. Through laboratory reconstructions and artificial aging experiments shown in the film, Kaplan also demonstrated the effectiveness of ammonia as a fixing agent, helping confirm techniques described in Florence’s writings. Watch how Kaplan and fellow scientists, including António Candeias of the HERCULES lab, confirmed that Florence used gold and silver as image-forming metals: 🔗 Read about how Getty scientists and curators unlock the mysteries of early photography: 🔗 Read more about the film in Adastra Journal: 🖼️ Images: 🔹 Scientists Art Kaplan and António Candeias analyze a photograph by Hercule Florence at the HERCULES Laboratory.
