I wrote a book…or a guide…whatever you want to call it. It’s everything I know and believe about putting yourself in the best position to get recruited to play college baseball. Building your school list. Creating your video. Reaching out to coaches. Following up. Having an actual plan. Here it is: it's FREE Just remember: no tool, guide, or advisor will ever replace getting really damn good at baseball.

My son just yelled “I’m Miz junior” then proceeded to throw a ball that hit the top of our fireplace, knocked down a photo and shattered glass all over our living room. So that’s neat

Instead of saying “open to all opportunities” in your recruiting posts, try narrowing that down. Because are you REALLY open to all opportunities? Or are you looking for a school that offers your intended major, gives you a chance to develop and compete, is within your preferred distance from home, and fits your financial situation? Try this instead: “‘27 RHP | JUCO, NAIA & D3 Prospect My current metrics align with the JUCO, NAIA and D3 levels. I’m looking for a program where I can earn an opportunity to compete for playing time within my first two years, continue developing my velocity, pursue a degree in Finance, and stay within 4 hours of home. If your program fits what I’m looking for, I’d love to attend a camp and show you what I can do. Coaches, please reach out!” See the difference? You’re not just asking for ANY opportunity. You’re telling coaches exactly what you’re looking for and making it easier for the RIGHT coaches to find you.

Today’s recruiting challenge: Email 10 schools you’re genuinely interested in attending and KNOW you’re a realistic fit for academically and athletically. Here’s what I’d send: “Coach (Name), I’m really interested in playing baseball at (School) because (specific reason). Here’s a link to my recent video and PBR profile with my updated metrics. I’m prioritizing attending 3–4 winter camps this year. Would you be willing to review my film and let me know if I’m the type of player you’d be interested in evaluating in person at your winter camp?” I already know the pushback, so spare me the “they’ll all say yes because they just want your money.” First, that’s not true. Second, even if it were, you’ve accomplished something. You’ve introduced yourself. You’ve started a conversation. You’ve given a coach an opportunity to evaluate you before spending a dime. Maybe they say yes. Maybe they say no. Maybe they tell you exactly what you need to improve. All of that is valuable information.

If you tell me you want to play college baseball, but you can’t be bothered to wake up and eat breakfast… There’s very little I can do to help you. You want to gain weight, get stronger, and become a college athlete? Start by consistently doing the little things that require absolutely zero talent. Your goals and your daily habits have to match.

Be an “AND” player. Not a “BUT” player. “He’s really talented, BUT he doesn’t work very hard.” “He’s a great athlete, BUT he’s not a great teammate.” “He can really play, BUT he makes bad decisions off the field.” “He’s got a ton of potential, BUT he’s not very coachable.” Now imagine being the AND player. “He’s really talented AND he works his tail off.” “He’s a great athlete AND an even better teammate.” “He can really play AND he makes great decisions off the field.” “He’s got a ton of potential AND he’s willing to do whatever it takes to reach it.” Talent might get you noticed. But all the things that come after the AND are what make coaches want you in their program.

RT @SFACoachMartin: Fellas, A college coach just followed you on X. Most athletes follow back, feel good about it, and wait. The window closes. The coach moves on to the next athlete. Here's what to do instead, right now, while the coach still has you on his mind. DM him immediately and say this word for word: "Coach Smith, thank you for the follow. I'm very interested in your program. Have you had a chance to watch my highlight video? [link to highlight video]" That's the whole message. Four sentences and a link. One of two things happens next. If he hasn't watched the tape, he will. If he has, your athlete just opened the door to the coach's feedback and the next step. A follow is not a recruiting move. A follow-back is not a recruiting move. The DM is the recruiting move. While other athletes collect coach follows like trophies, your athlete just turned his into a coach watching his film within 24 hours of finding him. You’re welcome.

RT @CoachSwit: In 1997, I had 25+ D1 offers coming out of JUCO. One D3 coach called me every Friday until I decided. He helped me through the process. Nearly 30 years later, we’re still friends. My point? Return EVERY coach’s call. Respect everyone. You’re never too big for anybody.

We give college baseball programs WAY too much credit for developing players. And probably way too much blame when players don’t develop. Here’s a thought. Every program in the country is great at player development if you’re willing to put in the work. And every program in the country is terrible at it if you’re not. Coaches can provide the plan, tools, resources, and direction. But the actual development happens when the player takes ownership of the process and consistently executes. At some point, we have to stop asking which programs develop players and start asking which players are committed to developing themselves.

My mission is pretty simple. Make Cedarburg baseball as good as it can possibly be. Create opportunities for kids to develop, compete, and achieve whatever their version of success is. Whatever it is, I want to help them get there. That’s it. That’s the mission.

A school's interest in you doesn’t obligate you to go there. But if your first reaction is, “I’m better than that level,” I’d encourage you to learn more before dismissing it. Watch them play. Look at the roster. Talk to the coach. Visit. You might still decide it isn’t for you. At least make that decision with some information.
