Education is the most powerful cause for good. A good education can change lives. A great education system can change countries. It is the privilege of my life to be able to play a part in making our education system better and fairer and opening the doors of opportunity for more Australians.

It’s World Teachers Day. Teachers light the way forward. They believe in us, before we even believe in ourselves. Thank you to teachers like Mrs Fry, my Year 1 teacher at Cabramatta Public School, and teachers everywhere, for inspiring, supporting and empowering our children and young people every single day.

There’s mounting evidence we need a digital detox in our schools. This will be on the agenda when education ministers meet next week.

Mums and dads want the bullying taken down. They want the smut gone. They want the algorithms out of their kids’ heads. They want their kids back. That’s why the Digital Duty of Care is so important. ————————— If you or someone you know needs support, please know that help is available. Contact Lifeline on 13 11 14 or visit

Go to school. It’s simple. That’s my message to students who plan to protest on a school day and especially on Remembrance Day. For at least one minute on this sacred day, pick up the poppy and put down the loudhailer.

There were some big brains putting bigger ideas to the test in the Great Hall of Parliament House today for the National Science and Engineering Challenge. This challenge hopefully ignited that spark and that love of learning and discovery that will help create the next generation of scientists, engineers, mathematicians and doctors. Every road we build, every disease we cure, every game or every gadget that is created is made possible because of people in STEM. Congratulations to all of the students who took part today.

Our children deserve safe and high quality early education and care. They deserve nothing less. That’s why we’ve taken the action we have. And that’s why we’re looking into a potential Early Education and Care Commission. To drive reform and keep our kids safe.

The number of people who download a ‘Nudify’ app every month is 200,000. It should be zero. The Digital Duty of Care Bill is about protecting our kids, and stopping these sickos from harming them.

I have said we need a digital detox in our schools. A new report says the average Year 11 and 12 student spends about an hour and a half a day at school on a screen - looking at stuff that has nothing to do with school. Games, googling, watching sport. Sending messages to mates. I’m not anti-tech. But this is not learning.

We’re fixing the funding of public schools and tying it to reform. We have now signed long-term agreements with every state and territory, with Victoria signing up last week. We also know our schools need a digital detox. This will be on the agenda when Education Ministers meet next week.

Last month I quoted St Joseph’s College Headmaster, Michael Blake in the Parliament. He told the young men at his school that he wanted women to be safe not merely from them, but safer because they are there. I thought what he said was extraordinary. This week, Jerome Laxale and I sat down with Michael and some of his students. Teaching boys to respect girls isn’t woke. It’s just common decency. And Michael Blake and the young men at his school are showing us the way.

We’ve just signed a long term agreement with the Victorian Government to fix the funding of all Victorian public schools. This means we now have long-term agreements signed with every state and territory across the country to fix the funding of public schools. Thank you to Afternoon Briefing for having me on to talk about this historic agreement with @PatsKarvelas

About 15 years ago David Gonski put in place a formula for how we should fund our schools. No government has done it until now, until this Albanese Labor Government. This week we signed a long-term agreement with the Victorian Government to fully and fairly fund all Victorian public schools. This agreement means we now have long-term agreements signed with every state and territory across the country to fix the funding of public schools.

There are amazing things happening in schools across Perth’s south. Thanks to the students, teachers and staff at Koorana Education Support Centre and Ridge View Secondary College for inviting @MadeleineMHKing and me in for a sticky beak yesterday. We checked out the soon to be open new Koorana classrooms funded through the Schools Upgrade Fund. And had a great chat with Ridge View’s thoughtful school leaders about how they can make a difference in their community, now and through their lives.
