84 years ago today, John Basilone became a legend during the brutal night fighting on Guadalcanal. 🪖 🧵The real story behind that machine gun stand is even more extraordinary.

Because Basilone was a Medal of Honor recipient, his family was granted the privilege of choosing his specific plot within the designated area of the cemetery. They selected a prominent plot near the road to make it easier for future visitors to pay their respects.

Every September, his home town, Raritan, hosts one of the largest military marches in the country & the only U.S. parade dedicated to an enlisted Marine. The annual parade in his honor has taken place over 40 years, dating back to 1981.

It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God that such men lived. 🇺🇸 - General George S. Patton
