The Gut Professor's Do-Not-Eat List Your supermarket trolley may be the most revealing health record you own. The foods you buy repeatedly feed you, then supply raw material to an intestinal community making chemicals of its own. Danish microbiome pioneer Oluf Borbye Pedersen has spent decades studying that second transaction. I investigated what he personally avoids, how much the science supports, and how to turn the findings into eight manageable weeks in the kitchen 👇

Europe is financing Ukraine’s survival. I wanted to understand how that partnership could also help build the industries our children will work in. The connection runs through Ukraine’s engineering knowledge, Europe’s factories and an AI economy that will need physical machines. I traced five industrial opportunities, their potential customers and the obstacles between them and a viable business. Here is where a new industrial revolution could begin.

On 17 February 1864, eight men climbed into a Confederate submarine called the H.L. Hunley and attempted something nobody had ever achieved: sinking a warship from underwater. I find the engineering wonderfully audacious and the safety arrangements rather less impressive. The submarine was powered by seven men turning a hand crank. Its weapon was essentially a bomb attached to a long pole. Against astonishing odds, it worked. The USS Housatonic sank within minutes, killing five sailors. Unfortunately, the Hunley disappeared too, taking all eight men with it. Imagine inventing an entirely new form of warfare, proving it worked, and never returning to explain how.

Something Is Changing: Governments Across Europe and the United States Are Telling Citizens to Prepare for Emergencies. On October 22, Britain launched its new Be Ready campaign, urging households to prepare for 72 hours without essential services. The European Union has issued similar guidance, while Finland, Sweden, Poland and the Baltic states are strengthening civil defence, shelters and evacuation plans. In the United States, FEMA continues advising Americans to maintain emergency supplies and family preparedness plans. Why now? Governments are increasingly concerned about Russian aggression, cyberattacks, infrastructure sabotage, power failures and extreme weather. The recommendations include drinking water, food, medication, batteries, emergency radios, cash and independent communication systems. Europe is also rebuilding civil defence capabilities neglected since the Cold War. This does not mean war is imminent. But the message is unmistakable: Western governments increasingly recognise that modern societies are dangerously dependent on infrastructure that can fail or be deliberately attacked. Preparedness is becoming a national security priority.

🛰 Great news! Ukraine has launched its first satellite for its own communications network Himera, together with Denmark's GomSpace, has launched the Obria Nano satellite into orbit. With its help, Ukraine will be able to develop its own communications infrastructure, relying less on foreign satellite systems. The first test satellite of Ukraine's future sovereign satellite communications network is already undergoing testing.

I have always suspected that Los Angeles contains more species than its casting directors know what to do with. Entomologist Brian Brown went further: he bet he could find an insect unknown to science in somebody’s backyard. The first specimen he examined proved him right. That wager became BioSCAN. Across suburban gardens, researchers discovered 30 new species of tiny flies, then documented a remarkable 99 species of one fly family in a single year’s samples. Imagine that. We search distant rainforests for biological wonders while entire undiscovered worlds conduct their business beside our own barbecue grills. Nature, apparently, has never felt obliged to respect our ideas about where wilderness begins.

RT @OlenaRohoza: The global response to Musk and Trump's pressure on Ukraine, accompanied by a temporary shutdown of Starshield, was swift. Here's where things stand now: 🇨🇦 CANADA The Canadian government has signed a CAD 2.3 billion contract with national satellite operator Telesat to expand its Lightspeed low-Earth-orbit satellite constellation. Lightspeed was originally developed as a commercial competitor to Starlink and OneWeb. However, the government is now funding the integration of a dedicated, secure military communications system operating in the Ka-band and has already placed an order for additional satellites with Canadian aerospace company MDA Space. 🇫🇮 FINLAND Finnish company ICEYE, a developer of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites, and Nokia have announced a strategic partnership to develop sovereign LEO broadband communications systems for interested European governments. The project aims to provide European countries with a ready-made platform allowing each government to fully own and control its own satellite communications infrastructure, including encryption, without dependence on foreign providers. This concept is known as "Sovereign SatCom." 🇪🇺 EUROPEAN UNION The European Commission has moved toward awarding manufacturing contracts and increasing funding for its sovereign satellite communications network, IRIS². Airbus Defence and Space has already signed contracts in Toulouse to manufacture the first 66 LEO satellites. Thales Alenia Space has been tasked with developing specialized secure payloads for government applications. The program has been expanded to 348 satellites, with an additional €4 billion in funding. 🇰🇷 SOUTH KOREA South Korea has successfully conducted its first orbital launch of the year using its domestically developed Nuri (KSLV-II) rocket from the Naro Space Center. The rocket simultaneously deployed 14 payloads, including additional satellites for the national NEONSAT constellation and several military CubeSats. 🇯🇵 JAPAN Japan has allocated approximately $1 billion in subsidies to develop a nationally controlled direct-to-device satellite network. The system is designed to allow ordinary smartphones to communicate directly with satellites during major earthquakes or military conflicts. The project involves cooperation between Rakuten and AST SpaceMobile. 🇺🇦 UKRAINE The UASAT project, an initiative by STETMAN and a consortium of partners, has successfully completed registration with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). Preparations are now underway for the UASAT-NANO test satellite, which will mark the first step toward creating Ukraine's own sovereign satellite constellation. 🇨🇿 CZECH REPUBLIC At the same time, agreements with the Czech Republic are being finalized for the joint development of a constellation of optical reconnaissance satellites called Suziria ("Constellation"). Ukraine is also expected to gain access to backup capacity within Europe's GOVSATCOM system. 🇩🇪 GERMANY German company Isar Aerospace successfully launched its Spectrum rocket into orbit carrying satellites on September 5. THE BIG PICTURE The brilliant strategists Elon and Donnie wanted to show us who controls the red button for satellite internet. Well, they succeeded. And in a strange way, perhaps we should thank them. Because they have reminded the entire world of one simple truth: Whoever controls your communications can control your future. And now countries around the world are working to make sure that no single billionaire — or American president — can ever hold that power over them again.

Today, Norway’s Jonas Gahr Støre and Finland’s Alexander Stubb called Putin directly, in consultation with Ukraine, ahead of planned talks in Abu Dhabi. Both reaffirmed their support for Kyiv. These are NATO neighbours of Russia whose security depends on what happens next. They were speaking for their own countries, without a mandate to represent Europe as a whole. But the initiative points towards something Europe urgently needs: to conduct its own diplomacy while keeping Ukraine central. Supporting Ukraine and speaking directly to its aggressor are entirely compatible.

Three down. Three left. The people have spoken. We have had enough of the chaos, the hatred, the corruption, and the authoritarian idiots who think the world belongs to them. Orbán, Bolsonaro and Vučić have all been rejected by voters. Today, Netanyahu could be next. And Trump looks increasingly likely to earn his own big red cross in the midterms. That leaves Putin. The rest of us must make sure Moscow gets its red cross too, by giving Ukraine everything it needs to defeat Russia’s imperial ambitions. The age of «strongmen» is looking a little less strong. And that is a beautiful thing. Remember when you could wake up in the morning without wondering which country was being threatened, which ally had been insulted, or which international crisis had been manufactured overnight by a man with an oversized ego? When politics was often boring, diplomacy happened behind closed doors, and world leaders generally tried to solve problems instead of creating three new ones before breakfast? It wasn’t a perfect world. Far from it. But there was a certain peace in not having to listen to angry old men demanding the world’s attention every single day. Imagine getting that peace back. Imagine a world where the morning news is about progress, discoveries and possibilities, rather than the latest threats, lies and tantrums. We deserve that world again.

The far far far right is losing elections. And voters appear to be losing patience. First Viktor Orbán in Hungary, after 16 years in power. Then Flávio Bolsonaro in Brazil, where voters rejected another attempt to return the Bolsonaro dynasty to the presidency. Now Aleksandar Vučić in Serbia, whose authoritarian grip on the country has been broken by a student-led democratic movement. Three countries. Three defeats. And across the Atlantic, Donald Trump’s Republicans are bleeding support. When a billionaire receives another enormous tax cut, somebody still has to pay for public services. And that somebody is you! There is only so long you can convince ordinary working people that making the extraordinarily wealthy even wealthier is somehow an act of economic patriotism. There is something else these defeats suggest. People are growing tired of politicians who admire dictators, attack democratic institutions, manufacture enemies and treat public office as their personal property. It is 2026. Most people want competent governments, affordable lives and a future for their children. They have remarkably little appetite for aspiring wannabe strongmen.
