Extra costs added to run the grid using intermittent electricity: - Transmission Network Use of System (TNUoS) - Electricity network balancing and curtailment costs (BSUoS) - Capacity market (designed to ensure adequate power during peak demand) - Distribution Use of System (DUoS) ^Most of these charges could be avoided if we used gas-fired generators for continuous and reliable energy situated nearer centres of demand. 2. Extra subsidies to prop up renewable generation: - Contracts for difference Levy (CfD) - Renewable Obligations (RO) - Feed-in Tariffs (FiT) - Nuclear Levy - Regulated Asset Base (RAB) ^The Government could significantly lower electricity bills by eliminating these subsidies with a stroke of a pen. 3. Compensation for energy-intensive industries suffering from high electricity bills - Tax exemptions and discounts - Energy Intensive Industries Support Levy (ESL) ^A better solution would be to drop the UK's carbon taxes, increased network costs and renewable subsidies that have driven up prices in the first place.
