Schuh Lab

Honored to receive the Falling Walls Science Breakthrough of the Year 2025 (Life Sciences)! 🧬 With Tabea Lilian Marx, Christopher Thomas & our team, we filmed ovulation in real time — a dream come true. 👉 #FallingWalls #ScienceSummit25

Chromosome errors in human eggs are a major cause of age-related infertility. Our lab has studied why they occur and developed promising approaches to reduce them. Great to see this work and its translation at Ovo Labs featured in @TheEconomist. (paywall)

We’re excited to welcome Carmela to the Schuh Lab as our new Postdoc! 🧬 With a background in molecular biology, epigenetics and germline development, she will investigate how epigenetic and cellular changes contribute to ovarian ageing. Welcome to the team, Carmela! 🎉

A great pleasure to give a keynote at the Germ Cells meeting at @CSHL. I shared our work on chromosome segregation in mammalian oocytes, how it changes with age, and our efforts to understand and prevent these errors. Very proud of our team and grateful for the great discussions!

Yesterday, we welcomed our former postdoc Chun So (Nick) for a talk on oocyte & embryo development @mpi_nat, followed by a roundtable discussion with the lab. @SpermnOocyte, it was great to have you back with us! Thank you for visiting and sharing your latest work with us! 🧬🙏

Huge congratulations to our PostDoc @palmrinmoy on receiving the Elisabeth Gateff Prize for his outstanding dissertation.🎉 His talk, “How DNA Self-Organizes in the Early Embryo,” and the award ceremony will be streamed online on 22 October at 3 pm! 🎥

A few days away from the lab, time together, plenty of opportunities to learn from each other – that was our #labretreat at Harnack Haus in Berlin. We shared knowledge during our “Teach Us Something” talks, deepended our statistics skills and explored science history in Dahlem.💡

Why does female fertility decline with age - could we one day do something about it? Delighted to contribute to the new @ARTEde documentary "Stecken wir in einer Eizellen-Krise?" featuring our research on why chromosomes become unstable in ageing eggs and how to keep them stable.

📺 You can find the documentary in German here:

Great news from our lab: Congratulations to Marios & @Debojit_Saha03 on receiving the 2025/26 Campus Seminar Awards at @mpi_nat! Marios was recognized in the PhD category, Debojit in the Postdoc category. Delighted to see their excellent research acknowledged — well deserved! 👏

For over 20 years I've studied how eggs develop & why chromosome errors rise with age. My lab & I have explored ways to reduce these errors. A portrait in @faznet reflects on my journey from cell biology to potential applications in reproductive medicine.

Last week, I had the great honour of being formally admitted as a Fellow of the @royalsociety & signing its historic Charter Book. Deeply grateful for this recognition of our work. None of this would've been possible without many wonderful lab members, colleagues & collaborators.

Congratulations to our Postdoc @palmrinmoy on receiving the Helmholtz Munich Doctoral Researcher Award 2026 for his outstanding PhD research. We are proud to now have you in our Schuh lab. A well-deserved recognition! 🎉🌟 📷credits: @HelmholtzMunich

We are glad to see Ovo Labs receive the Max Planck Society Startup Award today. Ovo Labs was founded to translate human oocyte biology research into therapies to improve IVF outcomes. A short film on the journey from basic research to biotech (German):

Great publication by our former Postdoc Nick (Chun) So, now PI at NIBS. Congratulations to So Lab @SpermnOocyte and the team! 🥳

Why 50% of human fertilized eggs fail to complete pre-implantation development? Latest work from my lab in @CellCellPress now clarifies the two causes that contribute to the low efficiency of early human embryos and provides one of the solutions. (1/7)

What happens inside human egg cells as they age, and why are errors so common? In the new episode “Ach, Mensch!” of @detektorfm (in German), Melina talks about fertility, ageing egg cells, future fertility treatments and the motivation behind her research.

I am deeply honored to have been elected as a Foreign Member of the @royalsociety. Very grateful to all members of the lab, past & present. Their curiosity & commitment to science shaped the work in countless ways. It's been a privilege to work with them.

A very special evening at the Rathaus in Schweinfurt, where I officially received the Carus Medal from the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.

Many congratulations to our PostDoc @palmrinmoy on receiving the Best Poster Award at the @EMBLEvents Practical Course “Ultrastructure Expansion Microscopy: From Cells to Tissue” last month! 🎉👏 A great achievement — very well deserved!
