Do you ever think, “I like Henry Ford’s antisemitism and untold wealth, but I hate how he reinvented the economy and created millions of jobs.” Well you’re in luck, because we’ve got Elon Musk.

Do you think our schools teach that 30% of the country lives in Texas or do you think most people don't really grasp what percentages mean.

Americans are immune to propoganda, they just on average think 21% of Americans are trans and 27% are Muslim for no real reason

I never want to hear about how Americans are propagandized again. We learn about the founding fathers' slaves in middle school, meanwhile grown ass adults in China think Mao was under democratic constraints somehow.

/ cyberpunk 2077's biggest issue is a disconnect. you unlock certain gigs / jobs at either street cred levels or throughout the story, but the game acts like you don't have time for any of that. phantom liberty feels like something that should be in act 3, the literal last resort

The problem with The Simpsons now is that every episode is something topical. There's an episode where the whole town is on Ozempic, one where Bart uses AI for homework, etc. They don't do timeless stories anymore.

‘THE SIMPSONS’ will air an episode titled ‘The Kosmic Kruiser’ where Bart and Lisa break into Krustyland’s “most notorious and failed attraction.” Jenny Nicholson will appear in a guest role.

Steel output definitely grew when he forced every farmer to melt down their equipment and give it to the state. Not great for food output though.
    Jostein Hauge @haugejostein
Under “dictator” Mao, life expectancy in China increased by 30 years, literacy rates went from 20% to 70%, steel output grew from 1 million to 23 million tons, 47 million hectares of land was taken from landlords and given to peasants, and China was unified under a strong central state and got nuclear weapons. Despite his failures, it does not take a rocket scientist to understand why Mao is revered in China.

You know what American propaganda I definitely swallowed? The belief that teaching at an Ivy or Oxbridge meant that you were a genius and not a third worldist crank.

Don't you think it's weird that China stopped doing Maoism the second he died. Like literally the first thing they did was arrest his wife.

Read like half an hours worth of actual history on Mao Zedong (not written by a conservative/yank), and you’ll probably realise he is one of the greatest humans to have ever lived by the end of the night.

It seems like a lot of state propaganda tells them that the West isn't actually free and it's all a facade. Not only can we make fun of our historical figures, we have a rich tradition of it.

A brief anecdote about Cenk Uyghur: in the 2016 Democratic primary he thought Arizona was rigged because the results were so different than Utah, and they're right next to each other.

The Civil Rights Act had a 59% approval rating. I know it's fun to pretend that the correct stance was always unpopular so you can pretend your enemies will be the bad guys of future period pieces but the majority of the country was actually convinced on this.

There is a two step process to winning every argument: 1) be right, 2) know why you're right. Everything beyond that is an exercise in sophistry and intellectual dishonesty.

“The Matthew Yglesias of 1963 would have been telling [JFK and LBJ] don’t touch this civil rights bill. It’s unpopular.” I thought this was one of the more fascinating and important exchanges with @mattyglesias, where I challenged him on how far politicians should defer to polls on huge moral issues, and he pushed back on my analogy. We see this all the time. I remember when people who opposed defunding the police would be for slavery, as if the country wasn't so evenly divided on slavery that the structure of our government was a compromise between the slaveowning and non-slaveowning states.
