.@coeff_giving directed over $1b in 2025, the most in our history. I wrote a more personal annual letter this year, focusing on what a decade of grantmaking has taught me, how I'm thinking about AI, and how we're grappling with giving at this scale. 🧵

RT @_NathanCalvin: I realize that Cathedral (the vulnerability researchers) didn't access Anthropic's weights or customer data, but there is no question that Anthropic has a ton of immensely sensitive information about model architecture research strategy etc in their Slack. Between this event and white hat researchers gaining access to OpenAI's mono-repo, the argument that we need to breakneck race to beat China looks more than a bit off when it seems like China will currently just be able to just take the fruits of research (and these small white hat teams are so much less capable than Chinese state backed hackers).
    will depue @willdepue
fact check: even truer rumor is Cathedral got a lot of Slack, maybe all of research. what the fuck are we doing guys

RT @alexolegimas: This is one of the most important pieces of social science on human and AI interaction that I’ve seen in some time. Experts follow agentic advice the vast majority of the time (causally), but only a tiny fraction credit the agent—majority think they came to decision on their own volition. Reminds me of the classic Nisbett and Wilson study on people following outside influence without realizing it “ But as more work is handed to AI—including AI safety research—these judgment calls are the main levers for people's own values to influence outcomes. If people defer to AI without noticing, then "human in the loop" might provide less assurance than people expect.”

New Anthropic research: How AI agents shape experts' judgment calls When experts delegate work to an agent, do they still make the key decisions? We tested this in a randomized trial with 50 professional data analysts.

RT @calebwatney: New Pacing the Frontier proposal: each time an outside group successfully penetrates the defenses of a frontier AI company and captures the flag, it should reset a 3-month countdown clock before they're allowed to train new models.

EXCLUSIVE: In less than 12 hours, a group of ex-DOGE cyber researchers were able to penetrate Anthropic’s systems using AI agents — including Slack channels where the most sensitive models are discussed. This is just weeks after Anthropic whistleblower Joseph Coxon charged the company w/launching “a hubristic gamble” from a “private company’s Slack.” Read our story here (gift link):

RT @kimmaicutler: It could not be more stark, according to the data. You could have the hardest-working, most prodigious Congressional representative or the most obstructive. “Based on 84 votes she cast on land use since she joined the board in 2021, Chan was second only to former Board President Aaron Peskin in amassing a record consistently opposed to liberalizing housing regulation.” “From Wiener’s first session in the state Senate in 2017-2018 through the 2025-2026 session, he authored the most bills of any legislator in the chamber, at 186. Of those bills, 97 passed and were signed by the governor — the second-most over that period.”

Lots of conversation around AI risks is about the gap between the unserious of AI labs' methods and how more rigorous industries work: airplanes, nuclear power, AI hardware. It would help a ton to lift AI to that level, but it is unclear even that level would be enough. 🧵
