Since summer 2023, the @bankofcanada has conducted nine rate cuts after rates peaked at 5% in a post-COVID rebound. 📉
Tomorrow, that’s expected to change with analysts expected a rate hike to 2.50% - a mirror of the @federalreserve’s 0.25% hike last month. 📈
In the US, the Federal Reserve has a formal “dual mandate”: Balancing unemployment and inflation.
The dual mandate is not a formal consideration of the Bank of Canada, but the 2021 renewal agreement between the BoC and Canadian government added a secondary goal of “maximum sustainable employment” secondary to price stability.
Following a rate hike, Canadians can expect:
- Payments on variable rate mortgages to rise at varying levels depending on years remaining and size
- A bump in the value of the Canadian dollar
- A rise in high-interest savings account and GIC rates
Elections can be costly. Literally. 💸
And they’re getting (understandably) more expensive as time goes on.
Here are the most expensive Canadian elections of the last 10 years (plus tonight’s Toronto election). 🗳️

The 36% counts the full size of every VC fund with a federal program among its investors. BDC's own direct investments in startups were a much smaller slice, about 3.5% of Canadian VC dollars in 2025.
RT @buildcanada: 🇨🇦 just launched a $1.75B VC push via BDC.
Split across 2 programs & 5 streams, it's been years in the making (and is likely still a few from actual investment).
Funds will flow through private fund managers, & only the $700M fund-of-funds stream is open for applications.

That is equivalent to the taxes paid by 909 median Canadians.
The CRA is aware of at least $300M in fraudulent claims of this nature.

Toronto's substantial portion of federal funding attributed to "Other federal programs" stems almost entirely from the Canada Public Transit Fund ($950.9M), plus $52.3M from Reaching Home (homelessness prevention).
During this fiscal period, the Ontario Line, the Scarborough Subway Extension, the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension, and the Yonge North Subway Extension were all under construction.
These lists capture data from:
- Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF)
- Canada-Quebec Housing Agreement
- Canada Community-Building Fund (CCBF)
- Quebec Gas Tax Program (TECQ)
- Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund (DMAF)
- Canada Public Transit Fund
- Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program
- Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund
- Reaching Home
- Affordable Housing Partnership
- Active Transportation Fund
Funding from these programs captures the vast majority of federal funding for municipalities, but small amounts from outside of these programs may not be reflected in counts.
