RT @ChristopherJM: Zelenskyy blasts Trump's new order exempting Russia from further sanctions, as their relationship breaks down: "At a time when the Russians have carried out such a massive attack on our energy sector, a decision was unfortunately made in America to completely disregard the Lindsey Graham Act, which was supposed to impose truly effective pressure on Russia to bring this war to an end. This Act could have helped enormously – and still can! But it needs to actually work, and every voice in support of it matters." "Russia is trying to cause a blackout in Ukraine – right before winter," Zelenskyy said. "Russia is trying to leave millions of our people without electricity and heating. Pressure is needed to stop this. A U.S. sanctions blackout, easing pressure on the aggressor, financial rewards for Putin – all of this only encourages him to keep attacking."
Volodymyr Zelenskyy / Володимир Зеленський @ZelenskyyUa
Yesterday, the Russians carried out one of their largest attacks on Ukraine’s energy sector – more than 15 critical power generation and transmission facilities were targeted across different regions of Ukraine. Restoration work is ongoing, with all necessary services and all available resources of Ukrainian energy companies involved. I thank everyone working practically nonstop to restore power. The most difficult situation was in Lutsk, Rivne, Zhytomyr, Vinnytsia, Shepetivka, Slavuta, and Netishyn. Energy facilities in the Kharkiv, Kyiv, Dnipro, and other regions were also hit. The Russians have scaled up their anti-energy operation and are trying to stretch our reserves and repair capabilities as thin as possible. Between 7 p.m. yesterday and 7 a.m. today alone, more than 320 jet-powered and gasoline-powered “shaheds,” along with loitering munitions, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles, were used against our energy sector, our cities, and our communities. And although our warriors are shooting down a significant number of them, the sheer scale and unrelenting pace of Russia’s strikes, specifically against our energy sector, are unfortunately having severe consequences. It is important that our European partners have already prepared new support packages for Ukraine. I am grateful to them for this. And it is important that everyone in America also sees what is really happening. At a time when the Russians have carried out such a massive attack on our energy sector, a decision was unfortunately made in America to completely disregard the Lindsey Graham Act, which was supposed to impose truly effective pressure on Russia to bring this war to an end. A U.S. sanctions blackout, easing pressure on the aggressor, financial rewards for Putin – all of this only encourages him to keep attacking. We must not give up ground. We must keep trying to end the war. To end it, not give Putin every reason to continue it indefinitely. I thank everyone who is truly fighting for peace and helping Ukraine!

RT @ChristopherJM: Latest: Zelenskyy tells reporters over WhatsApp that restrictions on Ukraine's Starlink systems remain. Interceptor drones can't function, logistics and operations hobbled. The maximum speed is 161 kph; "exceeding this limit causes the Starlink connection to cut out completely, resulting in the loss of the drone." He says Ukraine has done tests to determine whether SpaceX is truly facing technical issues, as has been told Kyiv by the US side, or if this is a "deliberate operation... to restrict us, cut us off, and prevent us from defending ourselves and protecting our people, both at the front and among the civilian population." He says Ukraine "sent a couple of vehicles equipped with Starlink terminals into European Union territory." "They moved at speeds exceeding 180kph, and the Starlink systems worked perfectly. We have the relevant logs and evidence to prove this." He adds: "The conclusion is clear: the restrictions are in effect within Ukraine but do not apply within the European Union. In other words, this is a planned operation."

on latest David Frum Show, I describe book I'd like to read but can't find: a study of slave raiding's impact upon the culture and society of Ukraine and Poland. Perhaps 2 million people were trafficked from Eastern Europe to Ottoman lands 1500-1800.

The study of the consequences for Eastern Europe of Ottoman slave-taking triggered political objections too: Turkish reluctance to open Ottoman archives; Soviet-era bans on scholarship that might transgress Marxist dogmas.

But above all, study of Eastern European slave experience offended Russian chauvinism. The way to have protected Eastern Europeans from Ottoman slaving was by strong states in Poland and Ukraine - and that was not a train of thought Moscow ever welcomed.

RT @ichbinilya: This story compellingly argues (despite the headline) that the crucial question of the next phase of this war is whether Ukraine can defend its cities against Russian air attacks. Munitions are running low. The United States is no longer an ally. The rest of the world is only tangentially involved. If anyone's going to help, it falls to Europe. The EU has three times Russia's population and eight times its economy. Yes yes, there are industrial bottlenecks, but surely the raw ability to address those is there. If help is not forthcoming, the missing element is political will.
