Research engineer Sofia Liguori resigned from Google's DeepMind this month over the company's AI technology being increasingly integrated into military and surveillance systems, particularly as part of Israel's war in Gaza.
While there has been a wave of high-profile resignations from tech companies over fears that AI might someday turn against humanity, Liguori says the "superintelligent god killing us all" narrative serves to distract from more immediate harms posed by the technology.
Months before Dolores Huerta's death, as a New York Times investigation revealed Cesar Chavez's history of sexual abuse of women and girls involved in the farmworkers movement, Huerta revealed that she, too, had been raped by Chavez in the 1960s. Huerta said the assaults led to the births of two of her children. She concealed the pregnancies and had kept the children's paternity secret.
Journalist Maria Hinojosa, who spoke with Huerta about this painful chapter in her life, says the labor icon felt immense pressure to stay silent about the abuse in order to protect the movement she had devoted her life to.
Immigrant rights and labor icon Dolores Huerta died Wednesday at the age of 96. Huerta co-founded the National Farm Workers Association with Cesar Chavez, representing Mexican farmworkers in California, which later merged with Filipino farmworkers with the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee to form the United Farm Workers of America. From 1965 to 1970, the union organized the historic Delano grape strike, which ended in major gains for farmworkers' labor rights.
"When people think about the strike, it's very dramatic, colorful," Huerta told Democracy Now! in 2017. "But what they don't see is the three years before the strike where we organize workers in house meetings."
