1/ People have been asking me why I decided to launch a ballot initiative for an all-party primary in Massachusetts. I've been working on this for five years, and I want to tell the story. So here goes. 🧵

1/ When a reform gets fought hard by both parties, that's not a red flag. It's proof it will do something real. A thread.

6/ Massachusetts Question 3 faces the same playbook — party leaders, unions, incumbents all running the same three arguments. None are supported by the evidence.

7/ What an all-party primary guarantees: real choices in November and elected officials who have to earn all our votes. That's what democracy requires.

Mal Salter's great recent piece in the Renovator tackles the carried interest tax loophole benefiting private equity managers, makes the case for getting rid of it, and shines a light on the special interest politics that have been holding it in place:

Driving thru upstate NY today and thinking about how it feels different from Western Mass made me curious about the distribution of farmland across the US. I know we know this but still powerful to see.

RT @vote_yeson3ma: Rev. Manikka Bowman endorses Question 3 for Massachusetts! 🔥🤩 "State races in Massachusetts should be as competitive as local elections, where most contests are nonpartisan. All-party primaries could encourage more people to run and give voters more candidate options. Massachusetts has one of the country's least productive and least competitive legislatures. Does that reflect our progressive values? It’s time to live up to our values by changing how we elect our leaders. If we can elect municipal leadership that isn't solely centered on party affiliation, we should do the same at the state level." Join our broad coalition of supporters and endorsers by voting YES on Massachusetts Question 3 by this November 3rd. Want to learn more about Question 3? Head to #massachusetts #yeson3 #vote

RT @vote_yeson3ma: Arlington resident Paul Schimek lays out the case for Question 3! "Some progressives say that Question 3 is a plot to enable the right wing, while some MAGA supporters claim that it is designed to cement Democratic domination. Neither is true. By moving the contest to the November election with vastly more participation, all-party primaries will help election outcomes better reflect the wishes of the citizens of each electoral district." #massachusetts #yeson3 #vote

Also love this truly brilliant piece tearing through the smokescreen created by the opposition to Yes on 3. And the dysfunction of our party system nationally? Turns out it flows from rules set up in Massachusetts more than 100 years ago.

1/ Love this piece by progressive Democrat Bob Massie arguing for Yes on Question 3- all party primaries. Your fall vote is largely ceremonial. The real election already happened — in a summer primary where only 22.7% of voters participated.

RT @vote_yeson3ma: Matt Wilson, Medford resident: "Question 3 won’t fix everything on Beacon Hill. But it can do something important: it will give more voters a meaningful choice and give candidates a reason to actually earn our support. That is real democracy."

7/ The data don't support the claim that Question 3 hurts working-class candidates. The current system already produces the worst possible outcome. Time to focus on what actually matters: the cost of running in ANY election system.

8/ And given that, far better to have a system with actual competition, that gives voters in November real choices and a legislature that listens.
