@africafilmpress: CANAL+ is extending its overhaul of MultiChoice’s pay-TV business across Africa, following the September introduction of simplified DStv subscription packages in South Africa. Similar offers are planned for English- and Portuguese-speaking African markets.
MultiChoice, acquired by the French media group in September 2025, reported a 3% decline in underlying revenue during the first nine months of 2026, driven by falling subscriptions in South Africa. Its other English-speaking African markets generally performed better.
The changes follow the 16 September closure of four DStv channels in South Africa, including Mzansi Bioskop, which carried locally produced films.
CANAL+ also acquired exclusive rights to UEFA men's club football competitions across more than 40 African countries for 2027–2031, its first major sports rights deal covering all its African markets.
The next development to watch comes on 28 October. At MIP Africa in Cape Town, CANAL+, MultiChoice and STUDIOCANAL will present their commissioning priorities and pitching procedures, with shortlisted producers pitching drama and unscripted projects.
Separately, CANAL+ opened Mancala Studios in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, on 20 October, with facilities capable of producing more than 1,000 hours of programming annually.
The financial update provided no new figures for African film and television commissioning or acquisitions.
