Imagine taking a long strip of paper, giving one end a half-twist, and joining the two ends together. You have just created a Möbius strip, one of the most surprising objects in mathematics. Cut the strip along that middle line. Instead of getting two separate loops, you get one longer loop with a full twist! The Möbius strip is an example of a non-orientable surface, a mathematical object on which the usual distinction between two sides cannot be maintained globally.
