According to the Book of Enoch, 200 beings came down from heaven, took human wives, and taught humanity what it was never supposed to know.
Then four archangels sealed them in an abyss at “the end of heaven and earth.”
Once you know this story, you start seeing it everywhere.
The New Testament even quotes Enoch directly (Jude 14).
Each archangel’s name fits his part in the sentence:
Raphael (“God heals”) binds Azazel in the desert and is told to heal the earth.
Gabriel (“God is my strength”) turns the Watchers’ giant sons against each other.
Michael (“Who is like God?”) chains their leader Semjaza and the rest for 70 generations.
Uriel (“God is my light”) warns Noah, and is set “over the world and over Tartarus.”
What the Watchers taught: metalworking and weapons, cosmetics, sorcery, herbs, astrology, and the paths of the sun, moon and stars.
Now watch the pattern repeat.
Pattern 1: Tartarus
2 Peter 2:4 says God cast the angels who sinned into Tartarus (Greek: tartarōsas). That’s the same prison where the Greeks locked away the Titans, the overthrown elder gods.
Pattern 2: Prometheus
A Titan who gave humans fire and taught them metals, the stars, medicine and divination.
His punishment? Chained at the edge of the world.
Pattern 3: The Apkallu
Mesopotamia’s seven sages brought civilization to humanity before the Flood. In the Erra Epic, Marduk sends them down into the Apsu, the abyss beneath the earth, and never lets them return.
Some scholars argue the Watchers story was built on them.
Pattern 4: Gilgamesh was a giant
The Book of Giants, found among the Dead Sea Scrolls, names Gilgamesh and Hobabish (Humbaba) among the giants, the sons of the Watchers.
Pattern 5: The scapegoat
On Yom Kippur, a goat carrying the people’s sins was sent “for Azazel.” Enoch says of Azazel, “to him ascribe all sin,” and has him bound under jagged rocks at Dudael.
Jewish tradition says the goat was pushed off a rocky cliff in the desert, at a place called Beit Hadudo.
Dudael. Hadudo.
Pattern 6: 70 generations
Enoch was “the seventh from Adam” (Jude 14). The Watchers were bound for 70 generations.
In Luke’s genealogy, Jesus is the 77th from Adam. 7 + 70.
And 1 Peter 3:19 says Christ went and “preached unto the spirits in prison” who disobeyed “in the days of Noah.”
Pattern 7: The abyss
The demons called Legion beg Jesus not to send them “into the abyss” (Luke 8:31).
In Enoch, demons are the spirits of the dead giants, the Watchers’ own sons.
They knew exactly where their fathers were.
Pattern 8: The release
In Revelation 9, a fallen star is given the key to the abyss. Then a voice commands: “Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates.”
Four archangels carried out the sentence. Four bound angels are set loose.
All of this can be understood in two very different ways.
I’ll share one of those interpretations in my next post.
