IRCC now lets you file a work permit while your LMIA is still in processing, and the old 60 to 90 day deadline is gone. Read the fine print: only within two weeks of your permit expiring, and it's not a last-minute LMIA fix. #LMIA#WorkPermit#IRCC#CanadaImmigration
Canada has increased the maximum employment duration employers can request through the low-wage LMIA stream from one year to up to two years. This is not to be confused with LMIA validity which remains at 6months.
This applies to LMIA applications submitted on or after November 6, 2026.
It is important to note that this means employees can apply for a 2 year Work permit instead of 1 year. Existing permits are not automatically extended, and employers must apply for new LMIAs for each extension.

Big TFW Program changes announced today. Here's what actually matters for employers and workers:
Starting today (Nov 6):
- Low-wage LMIAs can now be approved for up to 2 years, up from 1.
- Still no low-wage processing in cities with unemployment of 6% or higher. Healthcare, construction and food processing stay exempt, and early childhood educators are now added to that list.
Coming March 1, 2027 (if your province opts in):
- Big cities (250,000+) under 6% unemployment: low-wage LMIAs only for occupations on the federal shortage list (COPS), plus whatever the province adds or removes.
- Same model for smaller cities (100,000–250,000) and rural parts of big cities.
- Truly rural communities keep full access to every low-wage occupation.
- Provinces can ask to raise the low-wage cap from 10% to 15% of an employer's workforce in communities they pick. Priority sectors stay at 20%.
The PR side is the part I'm watching: Budget 2026 gives provinces extra PNP spaces and lets them use federal economic programs to keep workers who are already here.
Also: $151.5M over 5 years for faster service, and $82M over 4 years for migrant worker support. Employers who break the rules still face fines of up to $1M a year and bans.
TFWs are about 1% of Canada's workforce. National unemployment is 6.5%.
If you're an employer planning hires for 2027, or a worker on an LMIA permit, now is the time to plan.

New Express Entry Ministerial Instructions: Job Offers
No LMIA needed anymore. The officer now decides if your offer is genuine. They will check if:
(a) the employer is actively running the business (b) the job fits the employer's real needs (c) the employer can meet the offer terms (d) you are qualified and likely to do the job (e) the employer has followed employment and recruitment laws
Watch (d). Your past work or education must relate to the lead statement and main duties of the offered NOC.
No LMIA doesn't mean no scrutiny. If your background doesn't fit the job, the offer won't hold.

Important LMIA Updates Effective November 6, 2026!
Canada is introducing two significant changes to the Temporary Foreign Worker Program:
- Extended LMIA Duration: The maximum LMIA duration will increase from one year to up to two years.
- New ECE Exemption: Early Childhood Educators (ECEs) will be added to the list of exceptions for LMIA processing restrictions in CMAs with unemployment rates of 6% or higher.
These changes aim to provide greater flexibility for employers and address ongoing labour market needs across Canada.

For PSWs and caregivers, staying informed about LMIA and work permit requirements is essential.

🇦🇴 #Angola is making bold moves to modernize its labour market 🛠️📊
From 14–16 April in Luanda, a 3-day workshop trained key national actors to kickstart the 🇦🇴 Labour Market Information System (#LMIS), with support from the #EU and the @ilo.
A thread ⬇️
The report uncovers valuable insights on challenges & promising opportunities regarding the state of #LMIS, while the workshop aims to foster collaboration & innovation in data collection, processing, & dissemination, to elevate the quality & relevance of labour migration data.
The ILO through the #BRMM project handed over biometric readers and IT equipment to the Ministry of Labour and Skills to help improve the accuracy and efficiency of data collection and enhance the Labour Market Information System (#LMIS) in Ethiopia.
The three-day training strengthened the capacity of ESS, MoLS & Diaspora agency officials to generate credible & timely Labour-migration statistics from different sources. @ILO, #Ethiopia, #EastAfrica, @ESS, @MoLS, #LMIS, #LMMIS, @ILOSTAT, #BRMM
LMIA Update: Longer Employment Duration and New ECE Exemption
Canada has announced changes to the Temporary Foreign Worker Program’s Low-Wage Stream.
Effective November 6, 2026:
• New LMIA applications can request up to 2 years of employment, increased from 1 year.
• Early childhood educators are now exempt from the LMIA processing restriction in metropolitan areas with unemployment of 6% or higher.
Proposed for March 1, 2027, subject to provincial and territorial participation:
• Access in many urban areas would depend on the occupation and regional labour needs.
• Rural communities would retain access to all occupations.
• Eligible employers in designated communities could hire up to 15% of their workforce through the Low-Wage Stream, increased from 10%. Priority sectors would retain the existing 20% limit.
IRCC now says eligible in-Canada work permit applications can remain pending while the employer awaits an LMIA decision. Applicants may use code CPTS2026. This does not remove the LMIA requirement or guarantee approval. #IRCC#LMIA
