Apple Responds To iPhone Duo Early Frustrations After early reviews flagged software limits app black borders and high repair costs Apple has responded with a software and App Store plan not a recall. Our first piece noted Split View working properly only in landscape third party apps like Disney Plus showing black borders games not filling the screen YouTube leaving unused space the 5.4 inch outer display feeling awkward for some left handed users no option to move the dock or keyboard no telephoto weaker speakers bulkier build at 11.3 mm thick and a 999 dollar inner screen repair cost without AppleCare. Here is what Apple is now saying. On Multitasking Apple confirms Split View is inner display only two apps side by side with the ability to save app pairs and open two windows of the same app like Safari. iOS 27 is reimagined for Duo adapting as you fold reorienting when turned and switching displays when flipped. The Duo ships with iOS 27 dot 1. Picture in Picture remains for a small video window over another app. On App Optimization Apple acknowledges not all apps are ready and points to a new system in the App Store. Apps that are optimized will show a Made for iPhone Duo badge on their product pages. New App Store collections for Duo arrived at launch with further updates planned through the year. Developers are told to use size classes and responsive UI patterns reserved regions and arrangement APIs so apps can dynamically resize as the device folds and unfolds. Apple lists Netflix Prime Video Apple TV Zoom Slack Bear Fantastical Salesforce Things Microsoft Word and Outlook as already taking advantage of the folding design. Many other developers appear to be waiting to assess sales before optimizing. On Durability And Repair After reports this week of cracks along the inner display crease sometimes followed by dead pixels Apple said on October 26 we are aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units. If users experience issues with their iPhone Duo display they should contact AppleCare for a replacement. Apple has replaced affected units in stores but has not publicly commented on the 999 dollar inner screen repair cost cited by iFixit which gave the Duo a 5 out of 10 repairability score and found dust could enter the hinge despite IP68. What Apple Has Not Addressed No comment yet on moving the dock or keyboard for left handed use on the outer display. No comment on bringing Split View to portrait mode. No change to hardware trade offs like no telephoto weaker speakers or folded thickness which remain as designed. No comment on video layout issues where widescreen movies leave unused space. Bottom Line Apple is framing the frustrations as a first generation app transition rather than a hardware recall. The fix in Apples view is badges APIs and iOS 27 updates plus replacements for the small number of cracked units. Similar to Samsungs first Fold the ecosystem needs time to catch up. For owners the clearest signal is the Made for iPhone Duo badge in the App Store. That is Apples way of showing which apps have actually been reworked for the new form factor.

Apple's $1,999 iPhone Duo: Futuristic Hardware, First-Generation Frustrations Apple's first foldable iPhone, the Duo, launched on October 23, promising a new era of mobile productivity. However, early reviews suggest its impressive hardware is being held back by software limitations, inconsistent app support and reported durability concerns. The Duo's 7.6-inch inner display supports two apps side by side, but Split View works properly only in landscape orientation. In portrait mode, users return to a single app, limiting the device's potential as an iPad replacement. Third-party app optimization is another problem. While Netflix, Prime Video and Apple TV reportedly look good, apps such as Disney+ display large black borders, some games fail to use the full screen, and YouTube leaves unused space. Many developers appear to be waiting to assess sales before optimizing their applications. Usability also presents challenges. The 5.4-inch outer display has controls positioned inconveniently for some left-handed users, with no option to move the dock or keyboard to the opposite side. Apple has also replaced Face ID with Touch ID in the side button. More concerning are reports from early owners of cracks developing along the inner screen's crease, sometimes followed by dead pixels. Apple has reportedly replaced affected devices, but an out-of-warranty inner-screen repair costs $999 without AppleCare. The nearly square inner display also compromises video viewing. Widescreen movies leave substantial unused space, while Netflix reportedly struggles to adapt consistently when the device is folded into a laptop-like position. Other compromises include no telephoto camera, weaker speakers than the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and shorter battery life. Testing reportedly recorded 13 hours and 20 minutes for the Duo, compared with 17 hours and 31 minutes for the Pro Max. At 11.3 millimeters thick when folded, it is also relatively bulky. Ultimately, the Duo demonstrates Apple's ambition to redefine smartphones, but its software, app compatibility and durability concerns raise questions about whether the experience justifies its premium price.

Scattered minds: what research says about living in "everything at once" mode A game, music in your earbuds, and Reels on a second screen. Researchers call this media multitasking, and short-form video (TikTok, Reels, Shorts) is now studied as a separate factor. What the data shows The largest review so far was published in Psychological Bulletin. It covered 71 studies and 98,299 participants. More frequent short-form video use was linked to poorer cognitive performance (r = −0.34), most strongly for attention (r = −0.38) and inhibitory control (r = −0.41). Inhibitory control is the ability to ignore distractions and stay on task. The link with mental health is weaker (r = −0.21), but the clearest correlations are with stress (−0.34) and anxiety (−0.33). The authors also recorded a link with sleep disturbances. No consistent link with self-esteem or body image was found overall. A possible mechanism The most common explanation is that the brain adapts to rapid context switches and instant reward. This puts more load on the prefrontal cortex, which handles sustained attention. Sleep loss, often tied to late-night scrolling, further weakens self-control. The result is a loop: a scattered brain reaches for fast content, and that content further wrecks sleep and recovery. What about multitasking? Here the picture is more complicated. Ophir's pioneering 2009 study showed that frequent multitaskers filter out irrelevant stimuli worse. Later checks were less clear-cut. A 2017 meta-analysis found only a weak link with distractibility, which became statistically nonsignificant after correcting for small-study bias. A later three-level meta-analysis of 43 studies did confirm worse inhibitory control and working memory in heavy multitaskers, with no difference in cognitive flexibility. Important caveats These are correlations, not proven causation. Impulsive people may simply spend more time on short videos. Many studies rely on self-reported usage, and few accounted for overall social media time. The authors call for experimental and longitudinal studies. This is also not a diagnosis: ADHD or an anxiety disorder is diagnosed by a doctor, not by hours spent on Instagram. Consequences already described in the literature 1Weaker sustained attention and self-control. 2Higher stress and anxiety scores among heavy users. 3Worse sleep. 4Lower academic performance and more procrastination. A review of research from 2019 to 2025 describes a dose-response pattern: the more time spent on short videos, the more pronounced the attention problems. Conclusion The evidence doesn't say a phone breaks your brain. It says that the more fragmented content you consume, the worse the average outcome for attention, stress, and sleep. If you notice you can't finish reading a text, never feel rested, or are constantly anxious, talk to a doctor or psychologist rather than just setting app timers.

In the next 4 days you’ll see a lot of posts and videos titled: “I’m returning the iPhone Duo”, or “I’m switching back to the 18 Pro”. The return period ends after Friday for those of us who got the Duo on day 1. Many of these people never had any intention of keeping the phone, but wanted it to put out their review and make content. The iPhone Duo is a product we only get maybe once every 10 years from Apple, where putting out content for it early on is almost guaranteed to be successful. A lot of people just wanted to get in on that but had not desire to keep the phone and pay for it. Nothing wrong with that imo. People are allowed to take advantage of return policies. They aren’t breaking any rules. But just keep in mind, it’s not always purely about whether the Duo is good or not. It’s often that they weren’t going to keep it from the start. The Duo is too expensive for a lot of people to buy it if they don’t need it. I will say for me, as of today, I have no plan to return the phone unless some kind of defect comes up between now and Friday. I’ve been really enjoying it and I expect it to be my main iPhone for a while.

@jmwilt21 The Duo doesn’t provide the best multitasking & customizable features: - split screen only works in landscape mode - can’t resize windows - can’t create different themes for the outer & inner screen - no live wallpapers - the overall customization is bland & boring
