Database migrations at scale are rarely clean. @Netflix had nearly 400 #PostgreSQL clusters to move and doing it manually was never an option. So they built a self-service automated workflow instead. This is a really interesting read! The approach uses #Aurora read replicas for near-zero downtime, with traffic cutover handled through their Data Access Layer rather than application code changes. Replication lag, WAL validation, and CDC handling were all covered. This writeup from Ram Srivasta Kannan, Wale Akintayo, Jay Bharadwaj, John Crimmins, Shengwei Wang, and Zhitao Zhu is worth a read if you manage databases at any meaningful scale. Check it out!

You turned on RLS and your app went blank. That is not a bug. That is the default. RLS on with zero policies means deny everything. User A: 0 rows. Insert fails. The table owner still sees all 3 rows, because owners skip RLS. #Supabase #PostgreSQL

The 10-year database architecture cycle: 2015: SQL is obsolete. Schemas are too rigid. Put everything in NoSQL JSON documents. 2018: Wait, we need to join users and orders. Let's write a 400-line nested loop in JavaScript to join them in RAM. 2021: Wait, if the server crashes halfway through the loop, we lose money. We need ACID transactions. 2026: Quietly puts everything back in PostgreSQL and never speaks of it again.

@Arikalabs Mongodb is better than postgres in every single possible way. Mongo has indexes and achemas and relationships of course. If you're still doing postgres it's sad.

@justinmchase @Arikalabs I've been using MongoDB since 2012 and I disagree with you. PostgreSQL is way better than MongoDB. For small projects, it's fine, but for big ones, it's not worth it. Postgre is a lot better, especially with some valkey usages ( Redis).

Hey Rails + #PostgreSQL devs, what's one #PostgreSQL thing you wish you knew more about, that's not covered deeply (or at all) in the Rails Guides? Thanks!

Use RETURNING to avoid extra SELECT round-trips Don't run a second query just to fetch generated IDs, defaults, or updated values. Add RETURNING to INSERT, UPDATE, or DELETE to get the mutated rows back in a single database round-trip. #postgresql
