🚨 Cancer deaths linked to alcohol consumption have more than doubled in the U.S.
Scientists warn that even light drinking carries severe health risks.
A landmark study published in 'The Lancet Regional Health – Americas' reveals a stark rise in alcohol-attributable cancer deaths, which soared from 11,361 in 1990 to 23,126 in 2023.
Researchers from the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine found that while overall cancer mortality has declined, the proportion of cancer deaths linked to alcohol has dramatically increased.
The study highlights that the deadly impact of alcohol is not limited to liver disease; it plays a critical role in breast, colorectal, esophageal, and head and neck cancers. Alarmingly, older men and adults over 55 experienced the heaviest burden, though the rise was observed across nearly all demographic groups.
Despite the scientific consensus classifying alcohol as a Group 1 carcinogen alongside tobacco and asbestos, public awareness of this connection remains critically low. Health experts warn that there is no truly 'safe' level of consumption, as even one standard drink per day can elevate cancer risks. To combat this rising public health crisis, scientists and advocates are calling for stronger preventative strategies, including clearer cancer warning labels on alcoholic beverages, public education campaigns, and proactive screening by healthcare providers.

Ultra-processed foods supply more than 50% of the calories Americans eat.
Even children ages 1-5 get more than half their calories from UPFs.
This matters for several reasons. UPFs can drive overeating; they contain less fiber, micronutrients, and protein per calorie; and seem to uniquely promote fat gain (especially visceral fat) and inflammation.
And in children, UPF Intake is associated with faster increases in BMI, fat mass, and waist circumference. We should not be giving our children ultraprocessed foods, especially sugar-sweetened beverages. Minimally processed foods should be the foundation of meals and snacks, for everyone!
You know lemon, right? It is a tart, exciting, delicious and indispensable ingredient in recipes and beverages. But did you know that scientists have identified it is as a powerful medicine as well?
A federal class action lawsuit accuses Starbucks of deceptive marketing for labeling protein beverages as "sugar-free" despite containing between 13 and 21 grams of sugar per serving.

What a sensational idea for handing out candy for the kids, and adult beverages for the parents.
I wish someone did that when my son was young.
It's genius, and quite fun!
Oct 16 marks my last working day in the US. I handed in my badge. Nobody pushed me. No layoff, no visa scare, no deadline. I chose to leave.
Earlier this year I had to turn down an MBA at McCombs. That one still stings a little.
For three years I kept busy in garage door industry tech development in the leading brand in USA through the chip shortage. Every night after work I’d scroll through Indian FMCG. Brand launches, funding rounds, founders posting their first Blinkit listing.
I watched people start with one SKU and a WhatsApp group and turn it into a brand you see in every fridge. I was there for the early posts. I kept telling myself “someday.”
Someday got uncomfortable.
So I’m moving back to India to build Uncanned, a prebiotic soda with no added sugar. I don’t have the network those founders had. I’m starting from almost zero here, and I’m not too proud to say I need people.
Before I leave, I’ll be at SupplySide Global, BevNET Live in LA and Nosh Live top beverages and RTE expos. If you’re there, I’d love to grab a coffee.
And if you’re in FMCG anywhere, let’s talk shop. Trends, finds, mistakes, all of it.
Who was the first person who believed in you before you had anything to show?

They’re likely not wrong.
There seems to be a massive shift in the alcohol industry over the past 5 years.
Ask any bar / club / restaurant owner / worker.
The younger generation, currently in their 20s, never really took to drinking.
So a lot of the alcohol industry seems to be dependent on the 30+-year-olds.
Unfortunately, for them, those are the same ones that currently on the GLP1s, which are decreasing the cravings center for unhealthy habits, which include alcohol.
Good for the individual people and their health, bad for the big alcohol business.
Health and longevity, clean eating, exercise and non-toxic beverages are the future.
