Over the last decade, NBA YoungBoy has occupied one of the strangest positions in the contemporary music landscape. The rapper’s 775 YouTube videos have amassed a total of 19 billion views. For years, he was the most popular artist on the platform, ahead of both Drake and Taylor Swift. The Louisiana native is currently the rapper with the most RIAA-certified Gold songs in history and the youngest artist to achieve 100 entries in the Billboard Hot 100, but he’s never had a No. 1 hit. Most people either consider him one of the most important musicians alive today, or have never even heard his name.

Following years of house arrest, the prolific and polarising star has decamped to Paris. For the digital cover of i-D, he pauses for an intimate conversation about freedom, fatherhood, and redemption.
