In this video, Bolt, one of our African penguins, is seen preening in an off-exhibit area. Preening is how penguins groom and maintain their feathers, keeping them waterproof and free of debris. African penguins also preen each other, which helps strengthen bonds.

This behavior is sometimes called ‘scanning’ or ‘hunt swim’. Because their eyes are positioned on top of their heads, swimming upside down helps them to scan for food and predators below them. (2/2) 🎥: Keeper Olivia

The net holds one stingray at a time, so it’s a solo dining experience for these finned foodies. This allows keepers to monitor intake and make sure each ray is eating an appropriate amount. (4/4) 🎥: Keeper Elena

Southern stingrays are opportunistic foragers and often rest partially buried in sediment during the day. When hunting, they use their broad pectoral fins to stir up the sand and uncover hidden crustaceans and small fish—a strategy that doubles as camouflage. (2/2)
