A lot of the under-30 gym girlies will not have this context, so they aren’t necessarily at fault for this, but I watched this shit happen in real time. Thin was in for most of my early life. ESPECIALLY for white women. White women were not interested in having fat asses until the early 2010s when the Kl*nd*shians popularized BBLs and caricatured Black women’s natural figure into a cartoonishly goofy silhouette with weird proportions. The unintended side-effect of this was that naturally thicker white women finally found the confidence to love themselves and work towards attainable fitness goals, but that doesn’t change the seeds of appropriation and commodification of Black women’s bodies that blossomed into the flower of white women’s relatively newfound confidence.
