Mexican student Ángela Karime Venegas Hernández, 17, has gained international recognition after winning a gold medal at the International Science and Invention Fair in Indonesia in October 2026. The young inventor impressed judges with her innovative project, Vortex Tech, an experimental fire extinguisher designed to put out small flames using sound waves instead of traditional water, foam, or chemical extinguishing agents. Her invention uses low-frequency acoustic waves to disrupt the combustion process, potentially offering a cleaner alternative for certain fire-control applications. The achievement has brought attention to her scientific talent and highlighted the potential of young innovators to develop creative solutions to real-world problems.
Ángela, a student at CETis 78 in Altamira, Tamaulipas, spent approximately a year developing the invention alongside her uncle and scientific adviser, José Arturo Hernández Muñoz. After experimenting with five different prototypes, they created a device powered by a 12-volt battery, a frequency generator, an amplifier, and a speaker that produces sound waves at approximately 30 hertz. The sound creates air turbulence that interferes with the oxygen feeding a flame, allowing the device to extinguish small fires within seconds under experimental conditions. Her project competed against international entries and earned both a gold medal and the IYSA Semi Grand Award, qualifying her for another international science competition. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum also publicly recognized her achievement. Although the technology is still in its experimental stages and cannot replace conventional fire extinguishers, her accomplishment has attracted widespread praise for its creativity and potential future applications in fire safety.
