I’m hiring an NYC-based Managing Editor for @stripepress. The ideal person for this role has substantial editorial experience at a publishing imprint or another publication and is fluent in our universe of ideas, but ideally isn’t my (or our) ideological twin. Stripe Press is a small team with an unusual amount of autonomy. Right now we’re obsessively focused on the future: expanding our catalogue, rethinking our assumptions about the kinds of books we publish (fiction!?), and thinking about how to connect our readers w/ one another beyond the pop-ups we’ve been hosting since 2022. Hoping to meet a lot of brilliant people who love books and are excited about building a world-class publishing institution:

RT @zebriez: I was drawn to Silicon Valley because of people's healthy relationship to work. connection to mission. friends. ambition. financial security. hard work. but also free time. positive sum vibes. pride in being a part of it. joy. this is no longer the case. my friends have gone mad. and there's almost nowhere to hide. refusing to accept this fate, I went searching for safe havens. I found (at least) one in ottawa and spent the last 6 months with @turbopuffer where they've got silicon valley chops, canadian kindness, and danish sense of humor. it's been the perfect medicine. I wrote about it in @colossusmag
    Colossus @colossusmag
The people of Silicon Valley are unwell. If you work at a frontier lab or decacorn, you’ve got it bad. You haven’t seen your kids, your girlfriend’s annoyed, invites from friends to hang out are waning, even weddings are on hold. This is the time to make your mark and make your money, after all. If you’re building a startup that’s trying to compete with or be one of these companies, you’ve got it bad. Maybe you passed up a job offer at one a couple years back, which means you left $100M on the table, you fucking idiot. Being an underdog isn't as fun as you thought. If you’re working on a pre-AI startup, you’ve got it bad. Not too long ago you were the belle of the ball, but now your 30% year-on-year growth doesn’t feel like growth at all. It feels like death. "Too many of my friends are spiraling," Brie Wolfson writes. "I don’t know how we’re supposed to live and work like this." It’s all too much, too fast. Too much money, too much growth, too much power, too much change. Every month, a new frontier model is released. Every day, a new unicorn is minted. Seriously. 300 days into the year 2026, and 311 unicorns have been minted so far. So what’s left for the sane ones? Brie went looking for teams playing a different game. She found one in Ottawa: a search infrastructure company that many of the AI darlings rely on. It's growing fast, and its people are well. Read @zebriez’s latest company dispatch from inside the sane asylum of turbopuffer.

I think this crowd has got to learn how to ignore things. Not everything needs a rebuttal or a “look at this dummy” moment. I only know about these two incidents because the revealed preference of too many people in my feed (and worse, me!) is that these things need to be discussed to death.

And for younger people in this industry—especially those like me that do or want to do creative work—I promise you will be better off if you ignore most of what people are chattering about (especially if they’ve already made a ton of $ and are clearly bored…). Get a magazine subscription or five and follow your own nose.

One potential upside of AI allegations: we might see a lot more work-in-progress, esp from creatives. More sketches, more unfinished work, and, eventually, a richer public record of how things are actually made. I think that would be a very good thing.

RT @_theplaza: Today I can officially call myself an Acquisitions Editor @stripepress! I’m looking for new projects to seed our pipeline. If you are writing or thinking about any of these, email me: edv@stripe.com - trust as civilizational infrastructure: what reinforces trust? what erodes it? does it have a half-life? how does its presence or absence shape economic growth, institutional resilience, and everyday life? - parenting and the family/community ecosystems that produce smart, happy, and capable people - branding, advertising, and how institutions cultivate soft power - contemporary social commentary with a bite earned through obsessive observation (including essays!—who thinks they're the next Joan Didion?) - biotech and public health, esp. from a systems-level perspective - criticism!

As of today @stripepress officially has *two* full-time editors: myself & @_theplaza! Eloise comes to us from Folio, where she was a literary agent and nurtured by some of the best in the business. ~1.3 million books later we’re still only *just* getting started, and have huge ambitions to grow. More job postings coming in the next few weeks for NYC-based roles 😌📚

RT @cremieuxrecueil: Japan is often discussed as if it has uniquely low fertility. Its fertility rate is very low, but several countries–including ones with reputations for being lively!–are now even lower.

RT @Aria_Babu: People usually say that the pill caused the sexual revolution but a) people started having premarital sex in the 1950s, a decade before the pill and b) contraception is widely used by people who don't live very post-sexual-revolution lives (like in Asia). I think the sexual revolution, i.e. more permissive attitudes about sex, caused the pill to be invented and not the other way round. But then, why did the sexual revolution happen? I have cooked up a theory. Just as how women have more casual sex on college campuses with fewer men, I think women, as a collective, responded to the male shortage caused by the Second World War by shortening their hemlines and having premarital sex. And now you can preorder the NOMAD LETTERS (out December 1!): For years these letters have circulated (at first, unofficially) among investors, acquiring a devoted readership. We wanted to give them a permanent home in print. Nick and his partner Qais Zakaria’s record is extraordinary. The letters are the account of how they got there, featuring everything from studying Amazon and Costco (Nomad’s defining investments)—to visiting cement plants in Zimbabwe, and beyond. They’re candid about their mistakes and curious about the forces that shape investors’ behavior: incentives, psychology, and the wisdom (or foolishness!) of the crowd. Since closing the fund, they’ve devoted their time to philanthropy, a journey Nick recounts in the lovely foreword he wrote for this edition. I’m thrilled to continue adding to the investing corner of our catalogue, and I can’t think of a better work to follow Poor Charlie’s Almanack. ❣️
