We are a coalition of workers in & around the tech industry & other friends in NYC This account is run by a rotating group of volunteers. Tweets are their own.
🚨 Tech Workers Coalition and Collective Action in Tech are excited to announce the date for Circuit Breakers, our national tech labor conference! This year will be in NYC from Oct. 17-18th. Early bird tickets will be available soon, register for updates!
RT @GergelyOrosz: On one end, this is tough to see: MSFT has been one of the most stable Big Tech employers. Clearly, layoffs, unfortunately, glooming.
On the other: letting people DECIDE to take a package now, vs wait for the axe to drop is a far more considerate approach.

$MSFT offers 60,000 employees a voluntary exit.
60K Y’all!!
First time this has ever been offered at Microsoft and it will affect employees in India, The United States, Canada, and the UK at level 70 or below…
Employees find out in a few hours if they are being targeted for this.
This just makes me think that H127 layoffs sound intense. Is this a pre-layoff round?
Also makes me wonder if they changed some scheduled layoffs due to be called out by @VP. Peace offering? 🤔 Timing is just interesting.
More to come.

RT @destructoid: After more EA layoffs last week, a new report cites workers at the company complaining of "terrible" morale and "heavily pushed" generative AI like Claude. One called EA "a cold dead place that's slowly decaying as leadership pilfers every last cent."
RT @garybernhardt: There's at least one more option: roll back the networkification of all software over the last 20 years. Some software must be networked, but a lot is networked only because that enables more lucrative subscription business models. We could undo that.

There are two approaches to cybersecurity now that we’re in the vulnpolcalypse:
1. “patch the planet” by burning mountains of tokens, red teaming, and patching until you think there are no more exploitable bugs in the software
2. Shrink software components into their most minimal essence, tailor them to a particular system, and then formally verify it
Both approches are now enabled by LLMs. But only the second one can be done on a budget and without having access to frontier cyber models like mythos.
This is why I’m excited to see more legacy software get boiled down, hardened, and verified

RT @equalityAlec: I have just published a piece that is very important to me. It's about why so many "progressives" and people on "the left" are lying to us right now about crime, safety, and repression, and what we should be doing instead.
RT @longhaul_mag: All along the US-Mexico border, workers cross checkpoints after their shifts in sweatshop factories to donate plasma to U.S. corporations, feeding the most profitable part of a global plasma industry.
RT @longhaul_mag: "A wave of strikes moved through the plants of foreign auto companies. The wage demands were audacious, but even more riveting was the call for election of shopfloor union officers. Claims for democratic voice were being raised in a wholly authoritarian environment."
RT @judge_jen: This is an excellent debunker of AI consciousness by some of the biggest names in consciousness science (@anilkseth@De_dicto and Giulio Tononi)
Don't listen to the techbros. They have no idea what they're talking about where consciousness is concerned.
RT @josephfcox: New: the DHS officials who tried to search the man who wiped his GrapheneOS phone lied. They pushed him about having child abuse images. Documents reveal that was a pretext; he wasn't suspected of this at all. He's a Stop Cop City activist
It is a universally acknowledged truth that all bubbles burst. The only question is if we will hold their promoters accountable.

Nobody is sure when or if the AI bubble will burst. But its 100% clear that unregulated Silicon Valley and Wall Street corporations have endangered everyone without good reason.
Time to take control and reshape the tech industry, before its too late. Must read by @openmarkets:

RT @techworkersco: OpenAI later clarified that the device in their offices recording all conversations and interactions to an unknown end was, surprisingly, not one of their own products. Their court filing went on to explain “this is an outrage, spying is our lane.”

We discovered a sophisticated recording device that was hidden inside one of our offices. We used our models to understand the device and where it had come from, identifying that a specific employee had planted it a few days earlier. We referred the matter to the FBI, and we’re grateful to the agents and prosecutors who moved quickly to make an arrest. The FBI’s investigation is ongoing and we will continue to support their work.
At this time, we have no indications of this individual inappropriately accessing or exfiltrating model weights, source code, or customer data. The employee was terminated.
We take protecting our technology, data, and people seriously, and as a matter of national importance. Our security program is designed to protect against a wide range of threat actors, from insider risks to cybercriminals to nation states, and this case is an example of how AI can help address these sophisticated security threats.

RT @savingprivacy: The Flock saga is reaching truly chilling levels: when an Illinois college tried to cancel its contract and the company refused to take down its cameras, the college covered them. Then workers in unmarked vehicles repeatedly removed the coverings.
RT @TheLincoln: Broke: "LLMs mean we're getting UBI and will never work again!"
Woke: "After you die, Facebook will make your account post advertisements from beyond the grave for eternity."
RT @matthewstoller: Why are so many AI companies run by crooks and financed by Nvidia? I went over one of them that collapsed last week, an AI company called Firmus. It’s not a good sign. Some strong echoes of the late stage subprime crisis.
RT @techworkersco: more reasons to be mad about ai. ai scraper bots are destroying and performing a ddos across the entire internet. these locusts are trashing the commons in every respect.
RT @athenaforall: So let's recap:
- @AMZNforClimate reports show Amazon's emissions have *increased* despite its climate pledge
- The company doesn't know how to reach net-zero emissions
- Execs apparently think we're stupid enough to believe they care about the climate
RT @techworkersco: We are 25 days away from Circuit Breakers 2026 🌠 and we can’t wait to see everyone. Grab your tickets now!

RT @samfbiddle: Terms like "fancy autocomplete" were reductive sure but I think were also making the very important corrective point that AI is, as Arvind Narayanan and Sayash Kapoor have so eloquently put it, a normal technology, and not The Temporal Instantiation of the Machine God

"stochastic parrot" was a mimetically-fit cognitive virus that spread from 2021-2025; it temporarily blinded many gifted people to the nature of AI progress, burning up crucial years in which they could have helped think through the response to the situation.
