Hard Wake-Up Call
Social media was meant to be a place where we could share ideas, challenge assumptions, learn from each other, and maybe build something better for the generations coming after us. That was the intention. That was the hope.
But that’s not what we’ve created.
Instead, we’ve built a space where oversimplified quotes and personal opinions are dressed up as #fact and #truth, ignoring real human conditions and real complexity. And the moment you offer a different perspective, not hostility, not disrespect, just a thought that doesn’t fit the script, you’re labelled critical, toxic, negative, or “not aligned.” The responses aren’t reflective; they’re demeaning.
We say we want accountability, respect, honesty.
We just don’t want them applied to ourselves.
Social media has become a mirror of the world we’re living in: adults hiding behind screens, posting moral lessons they don’t live by, ignoring the consequences of their own behaviour while preaching about everyone else’s. It’s a bubble of self importance disguised as wisdom.
And here’s the part no one wants to hear:
We are failing the next generation.
The warning signs were there years ago, but we ignored them. I wrote the quotes attached below 10 years ago, and it breaks my heart that they are far more relevant today than they were a decade ago.
We complain about governments, leaders, systems, yet refuse to take responsibility for the culture we’re creating online. We blame the world for being a mess while contributing to the mess every day through our words, our reactions, and our refusal to think beyond our own bubble.
Sometimes I tell my friends I wish I had never left the remote community where I once lived and worked. Yes, it could be hostile and violent. Some days were incredibly difficult.
But there was a difference.
Many of the people there were grateful for my experience. They wanted to learn. They wanted different perspectives. Most importantly, they wanted to make things better for the younger generations coming after them.
Think about that.
I lived in an environment where hostility and violence could be part of everyday life, yet I still witnessed people willing to listen, learn and try to do better.
And sometimes I find less willingness to do that on social media.
That tells you something.
So I’m stepping back from posting and instead focusing my efforts on writing a book. It seems Nana’s old fashioned wisdom versus social media has a market after all. 🤣
I will still occasionally share some of the graphics that will be used in the book, based on my experiences here on X.
I won’t be posting regularly, but I will still be around because I have found a wonderful group of people here who appreciate me for who I am. People who can share ideas, laugh, disagree, support each other and still treat each other with respect.
They represent what social media was meant to be.
If this feels uncomfortable, it should.
It’s meant to.
